Classic contenders can come from anywhere and Emily Upjohn was shortened to 7-1 (from 25) for the Cazoo Oaks after landing her second start by nine and a half lengths under Frankie Dettori.

The three-year-old, who won on her debut for John and Thady Gosden, justified 5-4 favouritism when winning the 1m2f fillies' novice easily. She was introduced at 10-1 by Paddy Power after the race but her price tumbled to 7-1.

"I rode her the other day and thought, 'Wow!'. Not many horses take my breath away, but you like to see them do it in the afternoon," said Dettori. "We thought if she's an Oaks filly she should be able to win with a penalty, but I didn't expect her to win so impressively."

Thady Gosden indicated Emily Upjohn would be aimed at an Oaks trial, with the Musidora Stakes at York singled out as a likely target.

The Gosdens struck earlier on the card with Mostahdaf, who is set for an ambitious campaign after winning the Gordon Richards Stakes.

The four-year-old was badly hampered when suffering his only defeat in the St James's Palace Stakes last season and could be on course for another Royal Ascot tilt after winning by two and a half lengths.

"He ran well last season, although the St James's Palace didn't quite go to plan," said joint-trainer Thady Gosden. "It's nice to see him step up to a mile and a quarter for the first time and stay it well.

"You would have to consider the Coral-Eclipse but there is also the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. He's hopefully a horse to compete in those top mile and a quarter races this season."

Lights shines

After another impressive jumps campaign it was the turn of Cheveley Park's Flat horses to do the business and Lights On delivered when landing the Group 2 bet365 Mile from the fast-finishing Mutasaabeq.

Cheveley Park struck at last month's Cheltenham Festival with Gold Cup winner A Plus Tard and Allaho, and were rewarded for their decision to keep Lights On in training as she scored by a neck.

The five-year-old will be stepped up in class and could be aimed at the Falmouth Stakes or the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket.

"It was a fantastic performance," said Chris Richardson, Cheveley Park's managing director. "The pressure was on a little bit for the Flat horses. She's a super filly and Ryan [Moore] gave her the perfect ride. It's nice to have kept her in training and she's rewarded us.

"She definitely needs a bit of ease in the ground and Ryan says she might stay a bit further, so races such as the Falmouth and the Sun Chariot will come into consideration.

"I suppose we’ve had such a dry spell that you’d hope some rain is going to come, so it’s just going to be a question of making plenty of entries and dreaming."
