Coltrane sees out Ascot Stakes to delight of 5lb claimer Callum Hutchinson
Tuesday: Ascot Stakes, Royal Ascot
The Ascot Stakes has been won by Ryan Moore in three of the last ten years and the jockey was aboard the red-hot favourite Bring On The Night, but the pair were unable to outgun 5lb claimer Callum Hutchinson, who made a Royal Ascot breakthrough aboard Coltrane.
Hutchinson produced an astute tactical ride aboard the Chester Cup second as he settled him prominently off a slow pace and saved ground towards the inside as Golden Flame took the field along.
The rider did not panic about the muddling pace and saw off Moore, who could only reduce the winning margin to three-quarters of a length on the 3-1 favourite.
Coltrane returned at 14-1 and his delighted rider, who stood up in the irons to celebrate crossing the line, said: "It's unbelievable and I can't put it into words. A big thank you to the boss for giving me such a great opportunity, that's six winners from 17 for him and he's been great to me. Hopefully this winner will give me a kick and I can keep on progressing.
"He jumped beautifully and I kicked to go forward and sit handy. He got me out of trouble two out and finished really strongly. When I saw Ryan Moore coming I thought 'this could be game over', but he's tough and galloped strongly all the way to the line. This horse is a yard legend and a great horse to ride."
Hutchinson's father Wayne was a successful jump jockey and he added: "Obviously with Dad riding and him having multiple Grade 1 successes, riding was always something I wanted to do. To get a winner here, he'll be over the moon. He's working as a starter today and my mum and my nan are here, so they'll be delighted."
Balding praised the ride, saying: "He rode him like a seasoned pro. The only anxious moment was when Ryan was bearing down on him but he's ridden him to perfection. The horse is a stable favourite so everyone will be delighted."
Coltrane holds an entry in Saturday’s Queen Alexandra Stakes, for which he is an 8-1 chance. The last horse to win both races was Simenon in 2012. Bookmakers also trimmed him to 8-1 (from 12) for the Northumberland Plate on June 25.
