Chris Gordon was quick to give credit for his current hot streak to champion trainer Paul Nicholls after Only Money ran out a ready winner of the 2m½f handicap chase.

The eight-year-old had been off for eight months when scoring on his return at Plumpton last month, and followed up in impressive fashion under Tom Cannon. The two wins might not have happened had Nicholls not intervened.

Gordon, who also struck at Fontwell with Blame The Game to take his record to six wins from 11 runners in the past fortnight, explained: "Paul said I should scope them – he does it twice a year with stomach scopes – so out of 60 horses at home I had 31 done and he [Only Money] was by far the worst.

"He was grade four out of four – as bad as you can get. But I think it tells you a lot about how tough his constitution is. At the end of the day that’s the best we’ve ever seen out of him."

Gordon, however, is less enamoured with the work of the weather gods, despite his good recent run.

“Everything is moving in the right direction with the horses, but unfortunately the weather is not playing ball,” he added, casting doubt on the participation of Aucunrisque in a novice chase at Cheltenham on Friday

“It’s the same with Press Your Luck on Saturday. I’m dying to run him as he’s in flying form, but we need rain.”
