Buick, Appleby and Godolphin strike again in National Stakes with Native Trail
William Buick, Charlie Appleby and Godolphin enhanced their fine recent record in the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes as Native Trail maintained his unbeaten record with an ultra-impressive victory in the Group 1.
The son of Oasis Dream landed the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last time and stormed clear of odds-on favourite Point Lonsdale to provide the jockey, trainer and owner with a third success in the race in the last four years following Pinatubo and Quorto's victories in 2018 and 2019.
Victory capped off a perfect weekend for the team, who struck in the St Leger yesterday with Hurricane Lane, and they could already have a top Classic prospect in line for next season as Native Trail soared to the top of the 2,000 Guineas betting with Betfair Sportsbook and Paddy Power shortening him to 5-1 (from 10).
Coral made him the 4-1 market leader (from 10) for the Newmarket Classic, while Betfair also cut Native Trail to 7-4 (from 6) for the Dewhurst Stakes next month.
"It's a very important race for great two-year-olds, and this fella is certainly no different," Buick said. "He had two runs before, he was taking everything in and learning today, but he answered all my calls.
"There's more improvement to come in him and he'll get a mile next year. It was a great performance."
Foley and Harrington continue brilliant weekend as Discoveries takes Moyglare
Shane Foley and Jessie Harrington's brilliant Irish Champions Weekend rolled on to the Curragh as Discoveries edged out Agartha to land the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes.
The duo tasted Group 1 success with No Speak Alexander in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday, which was part of a treble for the pair, and they were celebrating more top-level honours with the regally bred juvenile, who reversed the form with the runner-up from the Debutante Stakes.
"She did that really well today, I'm absolutely thrilled," Harrington told Racing TV. "The ground the last day was soft and we knew when she ran on it she wouldn't go. She needs good, fast ground, which she got today."
A sister to star milers Alpha Centauri and Alpine Star, Discoveries will step up to that distance according to her trainer, and was introduced at 20-1 with Betfair Sportsbook and Paddy Power for next year's 1,000 Guineas, while Ladbrokes went significantly shorter at 10-1.
The trainer added: "We think she'll improve again, but today is the day. She'll get a mile no doubt."
Deep Bond strikes in the Foy for Japan
Deep Bond proved himself a live contender to give Japan a first Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe victory with a front-running success in the Prix Foy at Longchamp.
Cristian Demuro sent the four-year-old to the front leaving the stalls and was not for pegging back, with the Aidan O'Brien-trained Broome staying on for second, while favourite Skalleti was a disappointing fourth.
Deep Bond was cut to 20-1 (from 40) for the Arc next month and is expected to be joined in the race on October 3 by fellow Japanese superstar Chrono Genesis
Love beaten as La Petite Coco gets bobbing verdict in Blandford
Paddy Twomey's luck took a turn in the right direction on the second day of Irish Champions Weekend as La Petite Coco secured a last-gasp victory in the Blandford Stakes, nabbing Love on the line in a thrilling photo finish.
The three-year-old – winner of the Group 3 Give Thanks Stakes last time – continued her remarkable rise through the ranks when grinding down last season's 1,000 Guineas and Oaks heroine under Billy Lee and secure a first Group 2 success of her career.
It was a welcome change in fortune for the trainer, who saw his other star fillies Limiti Di Greccio and Pearls Galore both narrowly denied at Leopardstown yesterday.
"We hoped coming here she'd do something like that," Twomey said. "The worry was dropping in trip and the quicker ground, but I had a plan mapped out and this was it. We weren't changing course when we found out Love turned up as I think our filly is good.
"I thought she was beaten to be honest until the replay. Since the day she walked through the gates I thought she's good. The plan is to go to Ascot [for the Fillies and Mares Stakes] next as a mile and a half is her trip."

6-5 favourite Love, who came into the race on a recovery mission following a disappointing third in the Juddmonte International last month, looked to have the race in the bag when clear in the home straight, but the 9lb Group 1 penalty she was giving to the winner told in the dying stages as she was reeled in on the line.
La Petite Coco was cut to 9-2 (from 12) by Betfair Sportsbook and Paddy Power for British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes on Champions Day next month.
