Brilliant Baaeed strolls to fourth victory to leave Haggas aiming at the top

William Haggas and Shadwell Estates might have had a few balloons deflated this season with Mohaafeth and Al Aasy, but perhaps the combination's brightest star shone in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes when Baaeed strolled to arguably the most impressive performance of the week.

Haggas did not hesitate when saying the three-year-old would soon be dining at the top table and the ace Newmarket trainer was not thinking about The Ivy.

He was instead drooling over a sumptuous performance from a son of Sea The Stars whose audition as an electric miler went without a hitch, even if his pedigree – his year-older brother Hukum ran in last year's St Leger – belies an eyecatching cruising speed and lethal turn of foot.

Haggas said: "He's in three races – the Jacques le Marois, the Celebration Mile back here and the Moulin, which is in September.

"Whatever you think about how they win, they always have a race. I learned he doesn't have to have fast ground to be at his best, but otherwise it confirmed he's a good horse."

Paddy Power and Betfair make Baaeed as short as 5-2 for the Queen Elizabeth II Qipco Stakes at Ascot on British Champions Day, but his status as a top miler might have been tested in this week's Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

"He wasn't in the Sussex because when it closed he hadn't run," added Haggas. "Not many put an unraced horse in a Group 1 like that. We toyed with the idea of supplementing, but when the rain came on Sunday night I was very glad we hadn't.

"The entries for the QEII close next week and he'll get an entry!"

Haggas completed a double when the Queen's Wink Of An Eye notched a four-timer in the 1m3f handicap.

Double delight for Shadwell

Having bagged one of Glorious Goodwood's signature handicaps last year, Maydanny duly landed another when adding the Unibet Golden Mile to his 2020 Chesterfield Cup to make it two on the day for Jim Crowley and Shadwell.

Mark Johnston had considered seeking back-to-back victories in the 1m2f event on Tuesday but patience reaped a £77,310 reward.

Johnston said: "I had reservations about the ground. He had some form on it early on but then there were a couple of disappointing runs, so we were never absolutely sure. I haven't thought beyond today's race but a win like this probably merits a step back out of handicap company."

Goodwood is glorious for Hughes

Richard Hughes enjoyed some of the greatest days of his riding career at Glorious Goodwood, even retiring from the saddle on the meeting's final afternoon six years ago. Right up there with any of those moments in his personal estimations was Calling The Wind's victory in the marathon Unibet Goodwood Handicap.

The Cesarewitch-bound five-year-old had finished second in the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot on his previous outing and built on that effort to win readily under Pat Dobbs.

With the wind making the big screen unsafe to use, Hughes ended up watching the contest on a mobile phone in the grandstands.

"I was tempted to run back in, but I knew he had a big chance, so I wanted to enjoy the atmosphere out on the stands," said Hughes, who had felt significant pressure beforehand.

"It's the worst feeling in the world. I would ride in the Derby and not care two hoots. Even when I rode Canford Cliffs in the Sussex it wasn't as bad as the feeling I now get before a race. I almost feel like I'm going to be sick.

"Winning today is nearly a relief because I really did fancy him. We brought the family here today and we don't do that for nothing."

Passion And Glory handed German assignment

The Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden is next on the agenda for Passion And Glory, who successfully jumped out of handicap company under Oisin Murphy when holding off Euchen Glen in the Group 3 l'Ormarins Queen's Plate Glorious Stakes.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: "That's the best sort of ground for him and he handled it really well. I'm now thinking of taking him to Germany for the Group 1 at Baden-Baden. I've always liked the horse but tiny problems have kept stopping him."
