'Born to be a top jockey' - Benoit De La Sayette lands first career victory
Jockey Benoit De La Sayette was in a state disbelief after he rode his landmark first career winner aboard Hint Of Stars in the second division of the 1m4½f handicap.
The 18-year-old, who was a top pony rider in Britain and France before becoming an apprentice with John Gosden, scored on just his fifth ride under rules on the Kevin Philippart De Foy-trained three-year-old.
It was also only a second career winner for the rookie trainer, who saddled his first runner last month, and he swiftly gained his third when Greek Kodiac caused an 11-1 surprise in the 7f handicap.
The young jockey, who was almost lost for words, said: "It was unbelievable. I'm amazed. I can't believe it's happened."
The trainer, who has known De La Sayette from his time as assistant trainer to James Fanshawe, added: "It was great. He has plenty of experience in pony racing and won loads of races in that sphere. It may be his first winner but he's a very good, experienced kid and he'll do very well in the future.
"Benoit's dad, Geoffroy, has worked for James Fanshawe for many years and rides out Breeders' Cup winner Audarya. Benoit used to come and ride out for James in the summer holidays.
"He's a very serious kid who has very good hands when he rides. He's a top horseman and was born to be a top jockey."
Fellowes flourish
Newmarket trainer Charlie Fellowes, who also came through the training school of James Fanshawe, made the long journey up to the north east worthwhile when odds-on favourite Duel In The Sun narrowly obliged in the mile novice stakes.
Dwyer back in winning groove
After announcing his return to the training ranks in November, veteran trainer Chris Dwyer was back in the winner's enclosure for the first time in 774 days when his first runner back, Global Warning, struck in the 6f handicap.
