Bob Mahler made his case for the unluckiest loser of the season prize when dumping jockey Gavin Sheehan just yards from the winning post in the novices' hurdle.

In a dramatic end to the 2m4f contest, the 4-11 favourite looked to be getting the better of a prolonged battle with Swift Crusador after the last. But Bob Mahler, who had jinked to his left several times up the home straight, proved even more errant on the run-in.

He again swerved to his left, then seemed to duck back to his right before a slight stumble unbalanced Sheehan and sent him tumbling out of the saddle. It was a costly moment for those who had backed him at 1.04 on Betfair.
