Ben Curtis cashes in with treble on away day from Royal Ascot to Scotland

Ben Curtis took advantage of an away day from Royal Ascot to complete a treble in the first three races on the card at the Scottish track, kicking off with a juvenile double for Mark Johnston.

Curtis's haul moved him into fourth in the jockeys' standings and the highlight was the Johnston-trained Qipao's victory in the 6f maiden.

Surprisingly, the win was a first of the season for owners Chasemore Racing, who have widened their range of trainers this year and had hoped to be at Royal Ascot this week with their best horse Uncle Bryn.

Tom Goff, spokesman for the winning owners, said of the daughter of Muhaarar: "That was a pleasing debut from Qipao, who is out of Andrew Black's mare The Gold Cheongsam. A cheongsam is a Chinese dress and is also known as a qipao I'm told, hence the name. The filly was bought back at Tattersalls last October as she didn't make what Andrew wanted but she looks worth the money now."

On Uncle Bryn, who was a one-time Derby hope in the spring, Goff added: "He didn't run up to expectations in the Dante, so didn't run in the Derby, and we've since had him gelded. He's on his way back and will return to John and Thady Gosden's shortly. We still retain faith in him and hopefully he could make up into a nice horse in the autumn."

Curtis and Johnston had earlier linked up to bag the opening 5f restricted novice stakes with Jilly Cooper. The jockey went on to bag his quick-fire hat-trick when Stronsay won the 6f handicap for Liam Bailey.
