Bahrain: Warren Point helps secure Charlie Appleby double in Bahrain
Charlie Appleby continued his hot streak in the Middle East with two wins from two runners in Bahrain on Friday.
Britain's champion trainer got off the mark when King Of Conquest landed the £60,000 Anchorman Cup, one of two races in the penultimate round of the Bahrain Turf Series.
The four-year-old, a handicap winner at Wolverhampton in November, scored by a length under Richard Mullen from Classical Wave and the Keith Dalgleish-trained What's The Story.
"It was a very good performance," said Mullen. "He broke very well and I was always in a nice position but I was mindful I didn't want to ask him too many questions running down the hill.
"Once I swung into the straight, he was getting blown around by the headwind but he overcame it. He had a lot against him but he got through it. He's very genuine and has a heart of gold."
Appleby and Mullen secured their double in the Listed Crown Prince's Cup, one of Bahrain's biggest races alongside the International Trophy in November and His Majesty The King's Cup in March.
It was won by Warren Point, a winner at last year's Glorious Goodwood who followed up his victory in the Listed Floodlit Stakes at Kempton when beating local runner Tawaareq by three lengths.
"He's a talented horse," said Mullen. "He's got low mileage and he had all the form coming off the back of a Listed win in the UK. The main thing was to get him into a nice rhythm.
"As we turned into the straight, he picked up again without me even asking. It was an impressive performance. He was one of the last to ship out to Dubai so he's not done too much work.
"There should be a lot more improvement and he's one of those Dubawis who should improve with age. He's an exciting horse going forward and could win some big races in Europe this summer."
Appleby added: "It's been a good day for the team and we're delighted to come home with two horses who we hoped would be competitive.
"We hoped stepping up King of Conquest in trip would suit him. The ground was quick enough for him so it was a brave performance.
"We always hoped Warren Point would turn into a nice horse. They went a good gallop and that pleased me as we've seen he's effective over a mile and two furlongs and a mile and four furlongs."
Appleby recorded a number of major international victories last season, including three winners at the Breeders' Cup, and has landed several Group races at Meydan in Dubai already this year.
They include Friday's Grade 2 Cape Verdi, which was won by With The Moonlight, winner of the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket and Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks under William Buick last year.
