Roll up, roll up, who's here to see Baaeed? Who's turned up to see a champion? This is what one looks like and he's right in front of you.

The man in the lift is excited by him; not so much the man who was urinating in the hedge near the main entrance (when are racecourse security going to replace sniffer dogs with genital-attack dogs?), but then some people are beyond help.

I'm excited, but then it's my job to be excited. I'm looking out for that rarest of creatures, the excited murmur that runs through the crowd, but I'm struggling to find it, even as Baaeed wanders round the paddock. Perhaps people aren't excited by very nearly great horses anymore, or perhaps I'm expecting too much on a day that's custom-made for sitting on the lawn with a glass of something.
