Ralph Beckett continued his superb streak in the 1m½f maiden when Smoken provided him with a third consecutive victory in the opener and initiated a treble for the trainer and jockey Rossa Ryan.

Smoken emulated Artistic Star, who won the first division of the race in 2022, and Valvano in last year's event, by making a successful debut. Dual Classic winner Eldar Eldarov and last year’s Champion Stakes hero King Of Steel also began their careers in the contest.

The daughter of Too Darn Hot, the only filly in the line-up, finished two and a half lengths clear of the more experienced odds-on favourite Archivist. Sir Michael Stoute’s runner-up had filled the same position behind Beckett’s subsequent Group 3 Zetland Stakes winner Starzintheireyes.

“He’s been up behind two of ours of late and another horse I rode of the Coles that are all rated 90-plus,” Ryan told Racing TV.  “She took me into the race beautifully and loved a bit of juice in the ground. She didn’t know how to go clear and be impressive but the feel between the two and the one [furlong poles] was very nice and she’s an exciting prospect.”

Newcomer Revoir justified 6-4 favouritism in the following 1m½f fillies’ maiden before Albany defied a 385-day absence in the 1m2f handicap to complete a 95-1 treble for Beckett and Ryan.

Fifty up

David Allan reached 50 domestic winners for the season for the 11th year in a row when helping the Tim Easterby-trained I’m Next make a successful handicap debut in the 5f nursery.
