An emotional Wigan Julie hails her son's triumph as Cieren Fallon scores on his home ground
The ferocity with which Cieren Fallon thrust his right arm into the air said it all.
On any number of levels, the victory was remarkable, not least because Montassib had just claimed the Betfair Sprint Cup at 25-1. He was a six-year-old running in Group 1 company for the first time and the second string of a trainer who also supplied the more fancied third. Mostly, though, Haydock's showpiece Flat prize was memorable because of the triumphant jockey. This was a big win for him and a big win for Wigan.
Although born in Cambridge, Fallon was raised in a rugby league-loving town located less than seven miles from Haydock and only 30 minutes away by the 320 bus. Relatives and childhood friends were among those celebrating at a track where Fallon's six-time champion jockey father, Kieren, had claimed the Sprint Cup 12 years earlier on Society Rock.
