Alphonse Le Grande's owners have landed an ante-post touch by winning a race they may yet lose

In the moments after judge Paul Champion announced Alphonse Le Grande had won the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch, the 33-1 shot's owners ensured Newmarket's paddock was home to chaotic scenes. Chaos is now set to continue until the BHA's whip review committee meets on Tuesday.

One of the sport's marquee handicaps has long since been run, yet we still do not know who has definitively won. We know punters who supported Alphonse Le Grande are a fair bit richer and that many of those who backed 7-1 second Manxman have lost their money. The betting side of the Cesarewitch has been sorted. Ridiculously, the result of the race still hangs in the air.

There was always a chance, perhaps even an inevitability, something like this would one day mar a showpiece event. British racing's rules limit Flat riders to use the whip no more than six times, with four strikes over that limit leading to disqualification.
