Al Zaraqaan became the first horse to win in the blue and white silks of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum since his death on Wednesday.

The William Haggas-trained four-year-old recorded a four-timer in the Rosebery Handicap and led home a one-two for owner-breeder Shadwell Stud when finishing three lengths clear of Almighwar.

"It's a poignant success as Sheikh Hamdan was a star," said assistant trainer Maureen Haggas. "His passing was tragic as he was such a nice man that really loved his horses. He supported his trainers morally, not just financially, and you could could always talk to him."

On Al Zaraqaan, Haggas added: "He's a nice horse but mentally he's a bit babyish. He's not done much wrong since being beaten on his debut and hopefully he can develop into a really nice horse."

Back with a bang

Global Giant bounced back to form with an authoritative victory in the Listed Magnolia Stakes for trainers John and Thady Gosden.

The 8-15 favourite, last seen finishing down the field in the Saudi Cup, finished six lengths clear of Stormy Antarctic under Rab Havlin.

"He needed a confidence booster," said John Gosden. "He got the worst of the dirt down on the inside in the Saudi Cup last month and it's hard for runners to face it when they're not used to it.

"He's a lovely horse for Sheikh Isa [Salman Al Khalifa] and I'll talk to him but we might have a look at the Earl Of Sefton at Newmarket next month. It would be nice to win a Group race with him."

Global Giant secured a double for the winning trainers and jockey after Otyrar got off the mark in the opening 1m2f novice contest.

He was keen in the early stages but took the lead with a furlong to travel and finished a length and a half clear of 16-1 shot Auriferous.

"Apart from the shenanigans going into the first bend it was a straightforward race for Otyrar," said Gosden. "We're happy with him and he's learning the game. I think we'll stay at a mile and a quarter. but he'll probably get a mile and a half in the end."
