James Doyle avenged a short-price defeat in the opening match race with success in the 7f fillies' novice aboard Al Khawssaa.

The jockey was making a rare visit to Southwell, but he was beaten on the 1-3 Cardinal Point for Godolphin in the first race, the mile fillies' maiden. He had also been out of luck at Chepstow on Tuesday, when beaten a short head with his only ride on the card.

However, his fortunes later turned around as the Roger Varian-trained Al Khawssaa quickened clear to register her first success. She was taking on The Eyes Have It, who finished ahead of her on her sole start at Kempton, while the winner that day, Raheena, had followed up earlier on the card.

"That was nice and straightforward," said Doyle. "She was weighted to beat the [William] Haggas horse and was more alert and travelled much sweeter. She was still a little green when she hit the front so there's a bit to do learning-wise, but hopefully she'll keep improving."

Cardinal Point never travelled with fluency in the 1m fillies' maiden as Secret Of Love scored on her second start for Andrew Balding and PJ McDonald.

The winner had previously finished sixth on debut behind Tabiti, who is a leading contender in Thursday's Dick Poole Stakes at Salisbury.

Double for Havlin

Robert Havlin enjoyed two winners on the card. He kicked off his double aboard the Mark Usher-trained The Bay Warrior in the 1m3f handicap before Pappano landed the 1m6f handicap for John and Thady Gosden.
