£1,646 Summer Cup exacta as 33-1 Jerrysback kickstarts 934-1 Haslam treble
Sunday: Uttoxeter
The market is not always the best guide and the two biggest-priced runners in the £75,000 bet365 Summer Cup filled the first two places as 33-1 chance Jerrysback gained a big win for Ben Haslam over 50-1 outsider Ruthless Article.
A punter lucky enough to land the exacta will have been thrilled with a £1,646 payout for a £1 stake and anyone who landed the tricast – with 11-2 fancy Francky Du Berlais finishing third – will have had quite a night with a £1 return of £10,018.
Backers of Haslam's horses were certainly collecting on the day, with the trainer successful with three of his five runners after Brelan D'As and Dr Sanderson scored at Cartmel. The treble paid 934-1.
Jerrysback had won his previous start easily by 11 lengths at Cartmel last month and jockey Richie McLernon felt that was key for the JP McManus-owned horse, who was rated as high as 148 when trained by Philip Hobbs.
McLernon, who walked the track just after 9am and would have headed to Cartmel if the ground was too quick, said: “Ben and his team have done a fabulous job in getting him right, and getting his head right has been key.
“The win at Cartmel was a nice confidence booster and helped him coming into today. Every winner counts but these big summer races are really important to me.”
It was a second victory in the feature 3m2f handicap chase for McLernon, having struck on 28-1 shot Storm Survivor for Jonjo O’Neill and McManus in 2013.
Tough Texard
Texard had disappointed when a well-beaten favourite at Worcester four days earlier but bounced back quickly when a gritty winner of the 2m handicap chase.
The David Pipe-trained seven-year-old, a recent recruit for owners Fergus and Judith Wilson, could be kept busy as he is declared at Stratford on Tuesday.
Winning jockey Tom Scudamore said: "Texard had some good form in France and I don't know what went wrong the other day. He ran well on his first start for David though and that was a good performance – he was tough."
Rider relief
Tabitha Worsley ended a frustrating start to the season with victory on Bright Sunbird in the 2m4f mares’ novice handicap hurdle.
Worsley had gone 88 rides without a winner since March but had finished second on 11 of her 55 mounts – and third or fourth on 13 occasions – this term before striking on the Gary Hanmer-trained seven-year-old, who was winning for the first time.
She said: “It’s been a frustrating start but I can’t complain as they have been running well and quite a few at big prices. You just have to stay level headed and keep kicking.”
Hanmer enjoyed a quickfire double when Hillview, from 9lb out of the handicap, posted a career-best effort to win the 2m7½f handicap hurdle under Sean Bowen.
Double delight
Champion jockey Brian Hughes book-ended the card with wins on the Donald McCain-trained Presentandcounting in the 2m4f novice hurdle and Leopolds Rock for Phil Kirby in the 2m handicap hurdle.
