Record-breaking amateur jockey Patrick Mullins joins the Racing Post as a writer

Patrick Mullins, the most successful amateur rider in the history of jump racing, has joined the Racing Post team as a writer.

Mullins, who is also a brand ambassador for the Post, has already shown his flair as a journalist, winning a Wills Writing Award in 2012 for a piece about his first Grand National ride and subsequently writing for a number of publications, including the Irish Independent and Irish Field.

He said: "This will be my tenth year being sponsored by the Racing Post and when they asked me whether I'd like to write for them this year as well, I thought it would be something I'd enjoy doing. Hopefully I can bring a different perspective and add something new to the Post. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes."

Racing Post editor Tom Kerr added: "We're delighted to bring Patrick on board as a contributor. He might be better known as a brilliant Grade 1-winning jockey, but he also writes like a demon, bringing a unique perspective and gripping style to his work.

"He'll be writing a wide range of articles for us, including columns, interviews and first-person pieces, in which he'll share with readers just what it's like to be involved at the sharp end of some of the sport's greatest races.

"There's a long and glorious history of jockeys turning their hand to the written word, and I've no doubt that Patrick has the talent and insight to do their legacy proud."

Mullins rose to fame in 2008 when winning the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham on Cousin Vinny and has enjoyed many more Grade 1 victories since then, including this season on Min and Sharjah, on whom he was second in last season's Champion Hurdle.

He will write his first piece for the Racing Post in Saturday's newspaper as part of our Dublin Racing Festival coverage, an interview with Danny Mullins as the rider climbs the pecking order at Willie Mullins' Closutton yard following David Mullins' retirement.
