Racing Victoria monitoring allegations made against Phoenix founder Abdulaziz
Phoenix is already very active in Australia and signalled intent to expand
One of Australia’s leading racing authorities said on Thursday that it is in discussions with its international counterparts regarding the operations of Phoenix Thoroughbreds and the allegations of money laundering against its founder Amer Abdulaziz Salman.
Racing Victoria (RV), which oversees the likes of the world-famous Melbourne Spring Carnival, said that it was “aware of allegations” and would be “continuing to follow the associated legal proceedings in the USA”, where last year Abdulaziz was alleged in court to be a key money launderer for fake cryptocurrency scam OneCoin. Abdulaziz denies the allegations.
On Tuesday, Phoenix Thoroughbreds released a statement declaring its intention to withdraw from racing in Britain “with immediate effect”, although entries continue to be made for the group indicating a potentially more phased exit.
