Star apprentice Harry Davies makes no mistake on his first Godolphin call-up

Harry Davies: fourth winner from 13 rides for ace apprentice
Harry Davies: fourth winner from 13 rides for ace apprentice

Sunday: Kempton

Rising apprentice Harry Davies struck on his first ride for Godolphin when he steered Tranquil Night to a cosy victory under a penalty in the 7f novice stakes.

The 17-year-old was recording his fourth winner from just 13 rides when pushing out the Charlie Appleby-trained gelding to a second career win.

A dual champion pony racer, Davies is attached to Andrew Balding's yard, which was responsible for his market rival and third home Teumessias Fox.

The 7lb claimer said: "It's a lot to take in but I enjoyed every minute of it. When you get an opportunity for Godolphin and Mr Appleby it's quite surreal really, especially when it was only my 13th ride."

Davies, who had ridden his first winner for Balding the previous evening, produced the 10-11 shot to lead at the furlong pole and went on to win by two lengths.

He added: "Tranquil Night is a really nice horse and he'll probably get further than seven furlongs. He got into a good rhythm and took off when I asked him. He looks a progressive type."

Scott off to a Flyer

Mellys Flyer got George Scott off the mark for 2022 when he landed a gamble on his return to the Sunbury track in the 6f handicap.

The 2-1 market leader took advantage of his low draw in stall two to make all the running under Danny Muscutt.

Scott said: "Mellys Flyer took his time to settle down after we got him from the breeze-ups, but six furlongs around a bend suits him well. He might even make up into a horse for nice sprints in the spring."
