Perfect Saturday for jockey Joanna Mason continues her stellar Ripon record
Joanna Mason's decision to join the professional ranks last year was vindicated as she rode a memorable treble at combined odds of 86-1.
The 3lb claimer, a former leading amateur who shared the ladies' championship with Serena Brotherton in 2015, already had an eyecatching record at Ripon with a double at the course in May, but she enhanced it with a perfect three winners from three rides on Saturday.
Mason finished the meeting with a remarkable Ripon record of six wins from 11 rides in the last five years.
She got the ball rolling on the Ruth Carr-trained Copper And Five before following up with wins on Dubai Instinct for grandfather Mick Easterby and Ginato for Roger Fell.
Copper And Five's victory in the mile handicap provided Carr with her first success for 43 days and 56 runners.
"He's always had plenty of ability, but he's a bit quirky and Jo gets a good tune out of him," said the trainer, who owns the winner with Sally Doyle.
"I'm glad to get one on the board, they've been running well but not crossing the line in front. We've had a few hard luck stories and it's great to get a winner on a Saturday at a local course."
Copper And Five was ridden in the past by Carr's stable jockey Jimmy Sullivan, who returns to action at Redcar on Sunday following self-isolation after coming in close contact with someone with coronavirus.
Tudhope on a roll
Following a treble at Hamilton on Friday, Danny Tudhope continued his flying form with a clear-cut success on Briardale in the 1m2f handicap.
It took until the third race on the opening day of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival for a local winner, but Briardale could not have done it more easily for trainer Ed Bethell as he made all by five lengths.
Track first for Haynes
Newmarket trainer Alice Haynes made her first visit to the North Yorkshire track a winning one when Hollow Steel got off the mark in the 6f selling stakes.
Haynes has made a fine start to her training career since taking out a licence in February and the Andrew Harris-owned filly was her ninth winner.
