Josh Bryan bounces back from narrow defeat to turn tables with 40-1 success

Jockey Josh Bryan had contrasting fortunes in the two divisions of the mile maiden as he was first outgunned on Al Marmar in a tight finish before guiding Far Away Thoughts to a surprise 40-1 victory in the second division.

Bryan led on the Andrew Balding-trained newcomer Al Marmar with a furlong to go before being caught close to the line by Tom Marquand on Yonafis, another promising debutant for trainer William Haggas.

Placings were reversed in almost identical circumstances half an hour later when Bryan powered to victory on the Balding-trained Far Away Thoughts ahead of King Of Ice, representing Marquand and Haggas.

"He was still a bit green when they quickened up but once I gave him a dig down the hill he took off for me," said Bryan after Far Away Thoughts' surprise win.

"I didn’t want to have him out wide and be on his own, I wanted to have him go through horses and learn something on the job. He would have gone even further away if he'd had a run under his belt because he was a bit green when he hit the front."

Personal best

Smith’s dominant victory in the 2m handicap gave West Sussex trainer Lydia Richards a seventh Flat winner of the year, eclipsing her personal-best tally set 22 years ago.

It was a second course-and-distance victory in the space of 17 days for Smith, who hit the front in eyecatching fashion rounding the home turn under Rab Havlin before scoring by a commanding eight lengths.
