First winner for King Charles 'a very nice pick-me-up' as Just Fine scores

Tuesday: Leicester

History was made at Leicester when Just Fine became the first winner in the silks of King Charles, with the victory described as a "very nice pick-me-up" by the monarch's racing manager.

Just Fine is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who was the Queen's longest-standing trainer and famously saddled Estimate to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013.

Jockey Ryan Moore rode Estimate on that famous afternoon and similarly guided home the King's winner of the 1m2f handicap.

Just Fine was the King's sixth runner since the royal colours and horses were transferred to him following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. Educator was his first runner last Thursday.

The King's racing manager John Warren said: "We are all delighted for the King and Queen Consort that they have had their first winner in the Sovereign's colours.

"It's fitting that Sir Michael, who trains the horse, was the Queen's longest-standing trainer.

"As you can appreciate their royal highnesses have much to think about at present, but I'm sure this will be a very nice pick-me-up."

Stoute was also present alongside other trainers at the Queen's funeral service at Windsor and in his tribute following her death said it was an "honour and a privilege" to train royal runners.

Just Fine, sent off at 100-30, was recording his first win since July 2021 and held off 9-4 favourite Sea The Casper by four and a half lengths.
