Punter goes through Royal Ascot card to win £300,000 from £2.50 each-way bet
We all dream of going through the card as punters and for one customer with William Hill it became a reality at Royal Ascot on Friday, scooping over £300,000 from a £2.50 each-way accumulator.
The odds of the seven-leg bet totalled 122,889-1, with the customer's biggest-priced winner coming in the final leg courtesy of 9-1 shot Latin Lover, who returned a 5-1 chance in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes.
King Edward VII Stakes scorer Changingoftheguard will have made the punter most nervous, prevailing by just a short head in the penultimate race. The bet was placed in a shop in Watford.
The winning selections
Meditate 4-1 (SP 5-2)
Perfect Power 4-1 (SP 7-2jf)
Candleford 13-2 (SP 11-2)
Inspiral 10-3f (SP 15-8f)
Heredia 9-2f (SP 7-2f)
Changingoftheguard 7-4f (SP 11-10f)
Latin Lover 9-1 (5-1)
£2.50 each-way accumulator winning £307,464.02.
Tony Kenny, William Hill spokesperson, said: “Many of our customers try going through the card at the bigger meetings like Royal Ascot or Cheltenham but few manage it.
“However, one pulled off the incredible feat of successfully choosing all seven winners on the penultimate day of the royal meeting at a frankly ridiculous price of 122,889-1.
“The £2.50 each-way bet on Meditate, Perfect Power, Candleford, Inspiral, Heredia, Changingoftheguard and Latin Lover won them £307,464.02."
£20,000 bet placed on Platinum Jubilee hope
Star Sports have laid a £10,000 each-way wager on 16-1 shot Highfield Princess in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes (4.20).
The John Quinn-trained mare has won her last two starts, including the Group 2 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes on the Knavesmire last time, and landed the Buckingham Palace Stakes over 7f at this meeting last year.
5-2 favourite Home Affairs is an ante-post loser with Star Sports but had attracted "not much support" on raceday prior to 1.30pm.
Ed Dark, senior trader for Star Sports, said: "It was a tough day yesterday but hopefully we can end the meeting on the right note.
"We've laid £10,000 each-way on Highfield Princess in the Platinum Jubilee and a double of Alfred Munnings in the Chesham and Hurricane Lane in the Hardwicke is proving popular with favourite backers.
"Alfred Munnings is certainly a horse we hope gets beat and Missed The Cut, favourite for the Golden Gates, is one of the best backed in the handicaps with us."
A £5,000 each-way bet on 16-1 Chesham chance Faisal Road has been struck with the firm and Alflaila, an 8-1 shot in the Jersey, has been laid for £12,000.
