Wissahickon out to make winning return for John Gosden in Strensall Stakes

Wissahickon returns to action four months after being soundly beaten by Matterhorn on all-weather finals day and John Gosden is hoping his colt can bounce back in style.

The four-year-old has won eight of his 11 starts but has only his fourth run on turf, but Gosden believes the ground should suit.

He said: "Wissahickon has winning form at York, although it was over further, and he likes top of the ground, which he should get."

The Strensall is one of the few big pots Richard Fahey is yet to win at York but the trainer goes dual-handed with Forest Ranger and Space Traveller.

Forest Ranger indicated a return to form with success in the Huxley Stakes in May, while Space Traveller came out a surprise Royal Ascot winner as he landed the Jersey Stakes.

That was over seven furlongs and the trainer is excited at stepping the three-year-old up in distance.

"I’ve been mad keen to have a go at a mile with this fellow and we should find out if he stays here," Fahey wrote in his Sporting Life blog. "There’s every chance he'll get the trip and if he does he'll go well.

"Forest Ranger is carrying a penalty for winning the Huxley, which makes it tough for him. He's been placed in the race before and I’d be delighted if he managed that again."

Bangkok failed to fire in the York Stakes last time, but the King Power colt’s second behind Japan was given an almighty boost on Wednesday and trainer Andrew Balding expects him to be competitive.

He said: "Bangkok a horse with plenty of ability and I've been really happy with him. He's dropping back in trip, which is a bit of an experiment, but he's in great shape."

David O'Meara's Escobar looks to build on his impressive third in the Golden Mile, and has course form having won a handicap on the Knavesmire last month.

A drop down to seven furlongs appeared to work against Zaaki in the Lennox Stakes but the Diomed winner steps back up to 1m1f, which could work in his favour.
