Will David Dunsdon record his first British win in nine years after Galway heroics? Punting pointers for Thursday's racing
Punting pointers from some of Thursday's race meetings . . .
Ayr: can Doyle deliver the goods again?
James Doyle has ridden five winners from 14 rides at Ayr with a level-stakes profit of £18.08. His sole previous mount at the Scottish venue this season obliged and Catalyse (1.42), last seen running in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, looks the pick of his four rides as he aims to improve his 36 per cent strike-rate at the track.
Ayr: Sunshine out to strike again for Goldie
Eternal Sunshine could become the winningmost horse at Ayr in 2024 if securing her third win at the track this season in the second division of the 5f handicap (3.12).
The four-year-old has progressed 14lb from her opening mark of 55 courtesy of victories at Thirsk and Musselburgh either side of her Ayr successes. Jim Goldie’s filly would hold a perfect record at the Scottish venue had she not been just held by Giselles Izzy here last month.
Eternal Sunshine was beaten a neck on that occasion and lost out by a head to Zarzyni at Musselburgh last time, so the only defeats in her last six starts have not been by a wide margin.
The daughter of Orientor has been sent off the favourite in her last four outings and Paul Mulrennan’s mount is likely to be well supported again.
Goldie also runs Call Me Ginger, but the dual course winner has six and a half lengths to find with her stablemate on their last meeting.
Chelmsford: Dunsdon eyes British win
Owner-rider David Dunsdon's recent decision to come out of retirement was vindicated when he steered 50-1 shot Sirius to success at the Galway festival in July for Willie Mullins.
Dunsdon now has his sights set on a first victory in Britain since July 2015 in Chelmsford’s 1m2f handicap for gentleman amateur riders (4.20).
Dunsdon rides Platinum Prince, who has been placed in his last two starts, in the opener for Gary and Josh Moore.
The rider said: “I’m very grateful to Gary and Jayne and his owners for supporting the Fegentri race. They’ve always been great supporters of amateur riders with Ryan, Jamie, Josh and Hayley all having started their respective riding careers as amateurs.
“We’ve got a couple of riders coming over for it and Fletcher [Yarham], who’s represented Great Britain. Hopefully it’ll be a really good race to showcase amateur riders from the different countries.”
Naas: more Murtagh magic in maiden?
Johnny Murtagh won the 6f fillies’ maiden (2.25) that kicks off the seven-race card at Naas with Prime Art last year, and the trainer has a strong chance of repeating the feat.
Murtagh is represented by Vanderbilt House who, like Prime Art did before this event last year, has run respectably in a couple of hot-looking maidens and is dropping down in trip from seven furlongs.
Vanderbilt House was fifth behind Saturday’s Listed Ingabelle Stakes winner Chantez last time in a Leopardstown contest that is usually exceptionally strong, demonstrated by the fact Oaks heroine Ezeliya managed only fourth behind subsequent Yorkshire Oaks winner Content in last season's running.
Ben Coen, who partnered Vanderbilt House in her first two starts, will not be repeating last year’s victory as Shane Kelly comes in for the ride.
Pontefract: a rare Haggas visit
William Haggas has sent just four two-year-olds to the Yorkshire circuit in the last five years, resulting in a winner, a second and two fourth-placed finishes.
That suggests the presence of Apache Green in the 6f novice (2.33) should be noted, with Cieren Fallon also set to ride. Simon Munir and Isaac Souede's colt was sent to Ffos Las for his debut last month where he ran a respectable race in third.
The son of Showcasing will have to reverse the form with Seven Symphonies, who beat him by four and a quarter lengths last time and is trainer Ollie Sangster's first runner at the track this season.
The Haggas-Fallon combination are also represented with three-year-old With Style in the mile maiden (4.40). She was second, beaten only two lengths, at Kempton just under a fortnight ago.
Pontefract: Lidster out to enhance record
Craig Lidster has saddled three winners from eight runners at Pontefract this season at a level-stakes profit of £14.50. The trainer is represented by Masque Of Anarchy, who is rated 9lb lower than his last success, which came over course and distance, in the 1m2f handicap (3.33) as he bids to enhance his 38 per cent strike-rate.
Yarmouth: Murphy the jockey to follow
Oisin Murphy rode a double at Yarmouth on Tuesday, and is on the hunt for more success at the Norfolk venue with a solid book of Thursday rides.
The man set to become champion jockey for a fourth time has had an eyecatching 19 winners from 92 rides in the last five years at Yarmouth, a strike-rate of 21 per cent.
Perhaps the most interesting of them is Amazonian Dream in the 6f handicap (4.25), who Murphy has built up an excellent association with.
Three of the Rod Millman-trained sprinter's six wins have come with Murphy aboard, and the five-year-old has also been placed on four occasions under the same rider.
He also rides Lantern Yard (2.50), Environment Amigo (3.20), Ruby's Profit (3.50), Claxton Bay (5.00) and Split Elevens (5.35).
