All races are a product of their environment. The Greenham, a seven-furlong Group 3 for three-year-olds, would obviously be a totally different race if it were run in August. But there are other factors, too, and it could be argued that putting the Commonwealth Cup into the ecosystem has recalibrated the main Guineas trials.
In the early 2010s, the Greenham was the pre-eminent warm-up for Newmarket. Canford Cliffs was touched off by Dick Turpin in 2010, Frankel did the double the following year, the forecast in 2014 was reversed at Newmarket.
