The Juddmonte International began life in the early 1970s and as a result sits behind races like the Derby, Eclipse, even King George in terms of historical prestige. But it could easily be argued that, to a contemporary audience, the Juddmonte is Britain's best horserace.

'Best' is not so much subjective as poorly defined. The Pattern committee has one measure, which is based on the end-of-season ratings of the first four finishers, while most fans will have their own.
