Stayers' Hurdle fourth makes chasing debut, a Juddmonte Classic hope returns and two deadly combinations to note

Punting pointers from each of today's race meetings . . .

Brighton: profitable partnership

When John Berry teams up with Gina Mangan it's worth taking note.

The Newmarket trainer has provided the jockey with six winners from 15 rides this season for a red-hot 40 per cent strike-rate, returning a +34.50 profit to a £1 stake.

On this occasion they combine with course-and-distance winner Cloudy Rose, who is 1lb lower than her last winning mark, in the 1m4f handicap (3.40).

That success came in these conditions in April and three of the six-year-old's four successes have come at this track.

The last time Mangan rode Eljaytee in May it resulted in success and the pair are reunited in the 1m2f handicap (4.10).

He is only 1lb higher than for that victory and would also have strong claims from the bottom of the handicap.

Berry and Mangan's latest success came at the end of last month with Merrijig and it would be no a surprise if they added to their impressive tally.

Berry said: "They're both course-and-distance winners for the same jockey in the same class, so hopefully they'd have decent chances.

"They'd want different weather, though. Cloudy Rose likes it close to good and if they got a lot of rain she'd be a non-runner. For Eljaytee, any further rain would suit him well."

Brighton: Revenue stream

Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton has sent out four winners from 13 runners in 3yo+ handicaps at Brighton this season for a £1 level-stake profit of £31.50. She bids to enhance that record with course-and-distance winner Revenue (2.10).

Galway: Buddy back in action

Stayers' Hurdle fourth Buddy One attempts a successful chasing debut in the 2m6½f Guinness Chase (3.45).

The Paul Gilligan-trained seven-year-old outran his 40-1 odds behind Teahupoo in March and matched that effort at Aintree when finding only Strong Leader too good before finishing fourth again at the Punchestown festival.

A three-time winner rated 154, Buddy One should be tough to beat if jumping fences accurately as he is receiving weight from three inferior rivals in Donacheady Gale, Another Choice and Flanking Maneuver.

He is already a 25-1 chance for the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival.

Huntingdon: two chances for in-form trainer

Nigel Twiston-Davies is operating at an attractive 36 per cent strike-rate in October after saddling five winners from 14 runners.

The Naunton handler's horses are in clearly excellent form, so the fact he has chosen to send just two horses to Huntingdon is worth noting.

Ballintubber Boy (4.00) is unbeaten in two starts over the track's 3m1f hurdle course and didn't disgrace himself in a handicap hurdle at Galway when last seen in June.

One of those course-and-distance wins came in this race last year off a mark of 113 and, although he is 7lb higher in the handicap now, he always tends to find plenty under pressure.

His stablemate Touchwoodexpress is tried in cheekpieces for the first time in the 2m7½f novice handicap chase (4.35).

The point-to-point winner has had only three runs over hurdles but is swiftly being tried over fences, a route Twiston-Davies often likes to take with his string. Don't be surprised if he takes a considerable leap forward.

Huntingdon: trainer to note

Harry Derham has a 44 per cent strike-rate at Huntingdon (7-16, +12.60) and hands a stable debut to Recoded in the 2m3½f maiden hurdle (3.00).

Leicester: The Ridler conundrum for punters

The Ridler, who has been threatening an overdue success recently, drops in class in the 5f handicap (3.53) after his fifth in last month's Ayr Bronze Cup.

The Richard Fahey-trained four-year-old's last victory came when causing a 50-1 upset in the 2022 Norfolk Stakes and although he has not fulfilled the promise of his juvenile campaign, he has shown signs of a revival in the last few weeks.

He went close at Doncaster in August and also ran well at this track over 6f on his penultimate start when third, beaten two and a half lengths.

Owner Steve Bradley is looking to celebrate another win after The Ridler's half-sister Stormy Impact deservedly got off the mark at Musselburgh last week.

He said: "The ground might not be perfect and he's dropping back in trip, but he ran very well at Ayr and has got a fair chance."

Southwell: Juddmonte eyecatcher returns

Jonquil, who was favourite for the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at the St Leger meeting last time, will take a drop in class in the 7f novice stakes (6.30).

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained, Juddmonte-owned colt made an eyecatching winning debut at Sandown in August, after which assistant trainer James Savage said: "It's exciting. He's got a nice future."

However, he was unable to build on that effort and finished sixth to Benevento on Town Moor.

He has been handed an opening rating of 92 and will make his all-weather debut at a course where his trainer has sent out two winners from just six runners this year (33 per cent strike-rate).
