'She's a super filly' - Frankie Dettori reunited with Emily Upjohn and former boss John Gosden
Frankie Dettori has already had 15 Breeders' Cup victories but a reunion with former boss John Gosden could see him claim another when he partners Emily Upjohn in the Breeders' Cup Turf (9.01).
Last year Dettori rode a different star mare from the Gosden yard to victory when Inspiral landed the Filly & Mare Turf, with the success marking a glorious start to his new life in the States after a retirement U-turn.
He is now well settled in California and has become a mainstay rider in the West Coast's major races, yet he turns to old British contacts for half of his six rides on one of the biggest days of the US racing calendar.
Emily Upjohn was third in the Prix Vermeille behind subsequent Arc winner Bluestocking but has failed to win in six starts this year, and it was Dettori who last steered the five-year-old to victory when landing the 2023 Coronation Cup.
"It's been a long time since I rode Emily Upjohn, so it's nice to be back on her," he said. "We won a couple of Group 1 races together and just got pipped in the Oaks.
"She's a super filly and comes into the race with good credentials and very honest in every race she's won. She seems in a good place in her mind and that’s the most important thing at this stage."
While Dettori is well acquainted with John and Thady Gosden's operation, he rode for Newmarket trainer William Knight just nine times during his time in Britain, but teams up with him once more with Frost At Dawn, who tackles the dirt in the Filly & Mare Sprint (7.00).
"It's great to be here with a Breeders' Cup runner. It really is what dreams are made of," Knight said. "I'm happy with Frost At Dawn. She's been training well since shipping down from Keeneland and we're drawn in gate one, so hopefully she gets out and goes forward."
Dettori's other chances of Grade 1 glory come from his US-based backers, with the Bob Baffert-trained Newgate a 33-1 shot for the Breeders' Cup Classic (9.41). The four-year-old provided Dettori with his first Grade 1 success since moving abroad in the Santa Anita Handicap but faces a tough task against hot favourite City Of Troy.
Graded winner Big Invasion lines up in the Turf Sprint (7.41) for US-based trainer Christophe Clement, while Doug O'Neill gives Dettori the leg up in the concluding Dirt Mile (12.25) on Katonah.
The jockey is also in action on the card's sole Grade 3 contest (6.15) on the Owen Burrows-trained Raqiya, who landed the Oak Tree Stakes when last seen in July.
