Sayer in search of another win on unique all-female card

Emma Sayer is back for more at the unique Carlisle meeting for female riders on Monday evening, a year after her victory on Gold Chain set up a £20,000 payday.

The difference a year on is Sayer, 25, daughter of trainer Diane Sayer for whom she partners three horses, is no longer an apprentice but back among the amateur ranks.

Gold Chain, who set up her £20,000 bonus when Sayer went on to win the Ladies Trophy at Haydock later in the month, is back for a repeat in the 2m1f handicap for professional and amateur riders.

The trainer, who also runs Weapon Of Choice and My Valentino with Emma riding, said: "We're certainly giving it our best effort again but it gets tougher each year.

"It's a fantastic initiative and I'm delighted it's been so well supported. There are a lot of girls out there doing their best who need more help to get better in what is still a man's world. It's a great opportunity."

Assessing the team's chances the trainer added: "They're all in good form but Gold Chain is very unpredictable and the betting forecast says Weapon Of Choice is Emma's best chance.

"Emma was delighted to win last year and hopes to win again."

Of the £20,000 prize, Sayer added: "When Emma won at Haydock she had just been offered a job and returned to the amateur ranks.

"She hopes to train one day so the money helps to do the training modules. She has bought more equipment and has been gifted Cool Baranca, who won 15 races for us."

Carlisle's lady day is in its seventh year and has the popular hashtag #AmazingMonday.

Racecourse general manager Geraldine McKay said: "#AmazingMonday is one of the highlights of our race calendar both in terms of the action on the track and the atmosphere in the stands and around the course.

"Carlisle is proud to be at the forefront of supporting female jockeys with the only raceday in the world that has a female-only card."

The meeting includes the £20,000 Jockey Club North West Development Award presented to the jockey who rides a winner and then goes on to win the Ladies’ Trophy Handicap Stakes at Haydock Park.
