Saeed bin Suroor bids for an eighth win in Listed Goodwood contest - Wednesday's punting pointers

Punting pointers from each of today's race meetings . . .

Goodwood: Bin Suroor targets Foundation again

Goodwood is not lacking in quality or value, with the seven-race card including the Listed Foundation Stakes (4.05) and the British EBF £100,000 2yo Fillies' Series Final (4.40).

Saeed bin Suroor is no stranger to winning the Foundation and his bid for an eighth win in the race rests with the versatile Passion And Glory.

Bin Suroor said: “He likes going right-handed, which is why he likes Goodwood, and this looks the right race for him.

“He’s handled heavy ground in the past and we're looking for a good run from him.”

Ralph Beckett is also on the Foundation roll of honour and relies on Macduff, who not been seen since Royal Ascot.

Key stat: ground specialist

Tiriac is 2-3 (67 per cent strike-rate) on ground described as heavy, but is just 1-7 (six per cent) on anything better, so the rainfall this week makes him of huge interest in the 6f handicap (3.30).

Kempton: High Fibre rare Flat runner for Fry

Harry Fry is better known for his exploits over jumps, but he landed last year's Chester Cup with Metier and will look for his first winner on the Flat since with High Fibre in the 1m3f handicap (7.00).

High Fibre, who like Metier runs in the orange silks of owner Gary Stevens, has clearly had his issues, given he's had two year-long breaks and has made the track only three times since losing by a neck at Newmarket in April 2022 when trained by Ralph Beckett.

He finished ahead of the now 115-rated Israr that day, so he's clearly talented.

"His good form is the reason we bought him," Fry said. "Things haven't gone to plan as he didn't make it to the track over hurdles. We've cauterised his palate and waited for the autumn to get some cut in the ground. If he can get back to the form from a few years ago he should be competitive."

Listowel: Gaucher to defy poor record

The Seamus Mulvaney Bookmaker Novice Hurdle (2.35) has a habit of throwing up a smart winner – subsequent Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle and Stayers' Hurdle hero Penhill won it in 2016 – but it also has a habit of getting odds-on favourites beaten.

Bialystok (8-11) was only third of four last year; Farout (4-6) was second in 2021; Malone Road (2-5) third of four in 2020; Quartz De Rheu (4-6) second of six in 2019; and Minella Beau (4-9) was second of four in 2017. Even Galway Hurdle winner Aramon was beaten at skimpy odds in 2018 when runner-up at 5-4.

That makes it five horses trained by Willie Mullins who have been beaten at 5-4 or shorter since 2017. It's quite a worrying statistic if you fancy Gaucher, but he does look like he is going to be very hard to beat going left-handed and the stats aren't going to make him run any slower, as pro punter Mark Holder told us in his column last week.

Perth: can Potter maintain perfect course record?

Herefordshire-based trainer Ryan Potter doesn't send many horses north of the border and will look to add to a perfect record (1-1) at Perth with three runners.

Mistertommyshelby looks up against it in division one of the 2m4f handicap hurdle (4.13), but Potter seems to have found a good opportunity for Ithaka to bounce back in division two (4.45).

Ithaka has disappointed since running out a comfortable winner of a Class 5 2m5½f handicap hurdle at Wincanton in March 2023, but he ran right up to his best in that company at Taunton in March this year and this better ground, coupled with the shorter trip, could see a better show off a mark 7lb lower than for his last win.

Sean Bowen, who operates at a 29 per cent strike-rate at the track, takes the ride on Post No Bills, who is well handicapped if rediscovering his form back up in trip in the 2m4f handicap chase (3.38).

Redcar: Mason and Herrington team to note

Joanna Mason is having a fantastic year with 59 winners and nearly £600,000 in prize-money.

The majority of her success comes courtesy of Mick and David Easterby, but she should always be noted when teaming up with Michael Herrington, as the pair are operating at a 50 per cent strike-rate (4-8) when joining forces over the last five years.

Herrington tackles the 7f handicap (5.40) with Ratafia, a course-and-distance winner last October under Mason. Mason has ridden him five times, recording form figures of 11219 (latest can be ignored as his tongue was lolling out of the side, which has since been rectified).

"Joanna knows him well," the trainer said. "He likes it soft, so the ease in the ground would help. He needs to be ridden with confidence, so Joanna is good. It will be tough, though, as 17 runners at Redcar is a bit of a minefield."

Key stat: Havlin looking to enhance good course record

Robert Havlin has ridden five winners, two seconds and a third from ten rides at Redcar (50 per cent strike-rate). He rides Born Too Run (1.40), Wind River (3.55) and No Surrender (4.32) for Ed Dunlop.
