Robbie Wilders reckons Godolphin's Dhahabi could prove better than a handicapper
Friday: 2.25 Newmarket
Betfair Daily Rewards Suffolk Handicap | 1m1f | 3yo+ | ITV/RTV
Newmarket officials' knack of switching the position of the stalls on the Rowley Mile is illustrated by recent starts of the Betfair Daily Rewards Suffolk Handicap.
The stalls were positioned on the stands' side in 2012 and 2013, they were centre in 2014, stands' side from 2015 to 2018 before reverting to the centre again for the last two runnings.
They are in the centre again this season, and considering jockeys elected to keep to the middle on the occasions the stalls were berthed in the centre in that timeframe, it is probable history will repeat itself.
The assumption is outsider Fox Power will take the ten runners along from stall one with Forest Falcon well positioned to pounce via the neighbouring box.
Forest Falcon's dam produced her best run at this course, and this four-year-old returned with a decent third at Chelmsford and a joint personal-best RPR to boot.
Co-trainer Mark Johnston excels with this type, although Fast Medicine brings the more compelling last-time-out form to the table.
Fast Medicine returned a completely different beast at Nottingham two weeks ago following a gelding operation and first-time hood. The Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained four-year-old took up the running just before the two-furlong pole and put the race to bed quickly, winning eased down by six lengths.
He is well in under a 5lb penalty and is the rightful favourite, although it is worth noting he hung right and became slightly unbalanced on this course this time last year.
Charlie Appleby is enjoying an exceptional start to the season and Dhahabi is the most intriguing runner of all. Breaking slowly was a theme of his juvenile career and he returns to the track following 567 days off.
It is interesting he remains a colt, and this half-brother to Derby winner Golden Horn has a Hardwicke Stakes entry at Royal Ascot.
Dhahabi's pedigree screams middle-distances, and while this 1m1f trip will likely prove short of his optimum, he might be better than a handicapper, although breaking on terms will be key.

What they say
Charlie Appleby, trainer of Dhahabi
He was last seen finishing third in the Autumn Stakes. Unfortunately he met with setbacks during his three-year-old career. We held him in high regard during the early part of last season and it'll be nice to get him back on track.
Alastair Donald, racing manager for King Power Racing, owners of Notre Belle Bete
He's an improving horse and I think the stiff nine furlongs will be a perfect distance for him. I just hope that the going description of good remains. I suspect he is a horse whose chances may be increased with a little bit of a cushion in the ground.
Chris Wall, trainer of Turntable
He likes it here and has historically run well at Newmarket. He's been going well and ours are in good form. We'll hope to get a good run from him. He'd have to run a personal best to win it, but we're looking forward to a nice run first time out. He won't want it too firm, but given the watering that has taken place and the fact that it's quite cool and still here, any drying up will be pretty slow now.
Peter Chapple-Hyam, trainer of Fast Medicine
He didn't need to do much since his last run, he's had one gallop which was fine. It's a hard race, but he's in good form and he'll like the ground.
David Simcock, trainer of Fox Power
He seems very straightforward, he trains well and is a nice horse.
