Regally bred Noon Star bids to live up to her stellar pedigree in the Musidora
3.10 York
Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Group 3) | 1m2½f | 3yo fillies | ITV4/RTV
The Musidora is all about unearthing a bona fide Cazoo Oaks contender and based on her regal pedigree, Noon Star is certainly bred to become a Classic champion.
By super sire and 2001 Derby winner Galileo out of six-time Group 1 winner Midday, who failed by just a head to win the Oaks in 2009, the Juddmonte homebred certainly has curb appeal.
A general 8-1 chance for the Cazoo Oaks, she also looked smart at Wetherby last month, albeit that was in a 1m2f novice event and she now takes a big step up the ladder into Group 3 company.
"It's hard to get away from her pedigree when you're looking at her," said Juddmonte racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe. "She's always been a decent individual and a lovely character. From that point of view, this is a natural progression and will tell us where we're looking.
"If you mate Galileo to Midday and get a filly, you're hoping to end up at Epsom but this will give us a pretty good idea I'd imagine."
Asked about her progress since Wetherby, Grimthorpe added: "She's been very straightforward since her win, which did her a lot of good. She's not an extravagant worker at home, which makes it a little bit harder to gauge but nevertheless she's pleased."
Time for the talking to stop for Teona
Another potentially big week for Roger Varian, who runs Derby hope Royal Champion in the Dante Stakes on Thursday, starts here with Teona, who is no bigger than 5-1 for the Cazoo Oaks.
She is another who takes a big step up in class, although she more than hinted that she could be something out of the ordinary when a nine-length winner over 1m2f on her second and final start last season in a maiden at Newcastle.
She has been the subject of positive vibes from the Varian stable this spring and has been well backed for the Oaks in recent weeks.
"We've been very pleased with her preparation and the ground and the trip look ideal but this will bring her on as she's only had two all-weather races so far and is short on experience," said her trainer.
"She's worked nicely on the watered gallop and elsewhere lately and we expect her to run well. It's always been the plan to come to this race or Newbury as a prep for the Oaks."
No mystery about Angel's quality
A big day awaits for Newmarket trainer George Boughey, who after securing his first Listed winner when Mystery Angel scored in the Pretty Polly Stakes ten days ago, looks to the same filly to give him a breakthrough at Group level.
The most experienced in the field with seven runs to her name, Mystery Angel does not hold an Oaks entry but could well be supplemented should she make her mark here.
"It was a tricky decision to come here but she takes her racing very well and it was the natural step to take if we were staying in Britain," said Boughey. "It's a field of unexposed fillies but she's got masses of experience on her side. She's versatile with ground conditions and I think she'll run a big race."
He added: "It's where we want to be as a stable but she's won an Oaks trial already and deserves to be there. She's not in the Oaks but if she were to run a big race, the question has to be asked in an open year."
What they say
Ed Walker, trainer of Glenartney
Her work suggests this trip will be well within her reach and she's bred to be competing in this sort of race. Though this is a tough start to her season, she doesn't take a lot of work and there isn't a lot to achieve from running in another novice. It's not a big field and getting placed in a race like this is worth a lot. On her homework she's probably not up to winning but she could be open to a huge amount of improvement for the step up in trip.
John Gosden, joint-trainer of Senita
She ran too fresh and free to do herself justice on her return in a conditions race at Newbury but has come on from that and the idea would be to get some black type with her. It's a race we were keen to support as York has put up £75,000 for a Group 3 race which not many are doing just now.
Aidan O'Brien, trainer of Snowfall
She's in good form and we always thought she was better than her performances last year. We think she will like this trip and the drier the ground the better for her.
