Punting pointers for Tuesday's four meetings - including an intriguing debutant at Newcastle
Punting pointers from each of today's meetings . . .
Clonmel: Clegane bids to get back on track
The 3m hurdle (1.05) has been won by some classy sorts, and some dark horses will try to get their careers back on track in this year's running, including Sandor Clegane.
Trained by Paul Nolan, the seven-year-old looked to have the world at his feet in 2023 following a fine novice hurdling campaign, when he was third in a Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing Festival and the Albert Bartlett before winning at Punchestown.
However, he failed to land a blow in five starts over fences last term and returns from a 217-day absence.
Three Card Brag is another who is returning to hurdles after three starts over fences last season, and was well beaten behind Sandor Clegane at the 2023 Punchestown festival.
Lingfield: 'She's got a great chance of following up'
Isobelle Chalmers rode her first winner last month on Ashford Hill, who caused a huge 125-1 shock over course and distance, and the pair are out to prove the success was no fluke in the apprentice handicap (11.27).
The handicapper has raised Ashford Hill just 2lb for the victory and trainer Dominic Ffrench Davis is in good form too, operating at a 40 per cent strike-rate in the last fortnight.
Ffrench Davis said: "Isobelle give her a super ride last time and knows her well as her mother owns the horse. It wasn't a total surprise to us despite the price as she'd been working nicely.
"I think she's got a great chance of following up."
Lingfield stat
Stan Moore has a 60 per cent strike-rate with horses aged three or older in handicaps for a £19 profit to £1 level stakes, which is a pointer to the chances of Saturnalia (3.00).
Newcastle: another smart debutant?
The Gosdens famously started Enable's career on the all-weather in the north east and they could unleash another smart sort in the impeccably bred Ashmolean, who runs in the mile novice (4.00).
The homebred is a son of Frankel and the second foal of Coronet, who finished down the field in Enable's Oaks in 2017 before blossoming into a two-time Group 1 winner.
Her first foal Lanfranco, named after a certain Mr Dettori, has failed to win in four starts for the Gosdens, but hopes will be high Ashmolean can make a striking debut.
Newcastle stat
The Kevin Ryan-trained Barnaby is a perfect 4-4 at the track, with all of those wins coming on his last four starts. He bids for the five-timer in the 7f handicap (6.30).
Southwell: in-form Brooke has good book
Henry Brooke has been a jockey to keep on side recently. He can boast a 32 per cent strike-rate in the last fortnight, with six winners from 19 rides, and his three mounts on the seven-race card come for his bosses Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero.
The pick of his trio looks to be Neigh Botha in the 2m handicap chase (12.45).
The seven-year-old won over course and distance over hurdles last week and Guerriero said: "He's a summer horse who needs decent ground, so it will probably be his last run before his holiday.
"He's been pretty consistent and should go well again as long as the ground doesn't go soft."
Brooke's other two rides are Heroique De Maulde in the 2m4½f handicap chase (12.15) and Well Done Dani in the 2m4½f handicap hurdle (3.15).
