Newmarket trainer sends two to Dundalk as he bids for first winner at the track - punting pointers for Friday's action
Punting pointers from some of today's race meetings . . .
Dundalk: Tate pair in Listed tilt
Ger Lyons bids for a third successive victory in the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cooley Fillies & Mares Stakes (6.30) and is represented by four runners in Dundalk's feature. Sakti, winner of a maiden at the track in March, is his best chance according to the market.
Behind The Scenes and Cloud Cover are intriguing British runners for James Tate, who enjoyed his first winner in Ireland in July when Royal Dress took a Group 3 at the Curragh for Saeed Manana, who also owns today's pair.
Tate said: "Behind The Scenes hasn't run for a while so it's a big ask, but she's been going particularly well at home. She was fourth in this race last year so we're desperate to go at least one place better.
"Cloud Cover is an all-weather specialist. She's been second in a Listed race at Chelmsford, so she should win one ideally."
Fontwell: five-timer bid
Double Powerful has thrived since being upped in trip by Neil Mulholland and the son of Ocovango bids to complete a five-timer in Fontwell's feature 2m3f handicap hurdle (2.35).
This Class 3 will be the strongest grade the five-year-old has encountered and he is effectively 19lb worse off than for last month's 24-length success at Worcester as he will be without Dylan Johnston's 5lb claim.
Richie McClernon steered Double Powerful to the second win of his sequence at Market Rasen in March and his mount receives upwards of 11lb from his three rivals.
The chief interest among those three will be Kissman, a four-year-old who is having his first start in Britain and for the Josh and Gary Moore yard. He won at Compiegne by eight lengths last time and makes his handicap debut.
Fontwell: hot trainer
Three of Nigel Twiston-Davies's four runners at Fontwell this season have won won and he could enhance that 75 per cent strike-rate should Safe Destination (3.10) and Mavis Pike (3.45) make it back-to-back victories.
Hexham: Grade 2 Aintree form represented
Just Call Me Lucy was last seen finishing eighth in the Grade 2 mares' bumper at the Grand National meeting and she makes her hurdling debut in a Hexham race (1.37) that was won by subsequent Listed winner Stainsby Girl in 2020 and future Listed runner-up Lunar Discovery last year.
The third, fifth, seventh, 13th and 14th from Aintree have all won over hurdles since and Just Call Me Lucy should have the ability to do likewise, having won by 17 lengths at Carlisle last December.
Trainer Mark Walford said: "I think her race at Aintree was one of the best mares' bumpers of last season. We were pleased with her run, she wasn't beaten by a mile and was staying on nicely at the end.
"She's schooled really well and I've been really pleased with her jumping. The stiff track at Hexham should suit and her work's been good, so I'm expecting a decent run."
Hexham: perfect course record
Both of Jennie Candlish's runners at Hexham this season have won and she bids to maintain her strong record at the track with last-time-out Worcester winner Fromheretoeternity (1.37) as well as Grifter (3.20) and Bergentown (3.55).
Newcastle: two well in rivals clash
Newcastle’s opener (3.28) features the hat-trick-seeking Isle Of Wolves and course winner Molinari.
The latter built on two placed efforts to score by eight and a half lengths over 1m4½f at this track last Monday and is officially 6lb well in.
The drop back to 1m2f should not be an issue for the seven-year-old as he has twice won over that distance but the presence of Isle Of Wolves may prevent him from following up.
The Harriet Bethell-trained eight-year-old is also 6lb well in, having been raised 10lb for a wide-margin victory at Nottingham last Wednesday.
The son of Nathaniel has won three of his last four turf starts but has yet to score in 24 all-weather outings. However, he was beaten only three-quarters of a length on his last visit to this track in June – the fourth time he has finished runner-up at this venue – over today's trip.
