Might Bite: brilliant, bonkers and back for more
The unpredictable and talented chaser returns to action at Sandown on Sunday
Might Bite returns to action on Sunday after being declared for the Listed 188Bet Future Stars Intermediate Chase at Sandown (2.20).
The eight-year-old takes on three rivals and his reappearance is eagerly anticipated by jumps fans. Here is why . . .
The one where it all went right
Mildmay Novices’ Chase, Aintree, April 7, 2017
This was the last time we saw Might Bite before his summer break and by golly he was impressive.
Ridden with slightly less force than when winning at Cheltenham (see below…), Might Bite went through the race like a class animal with his mind in the right place.
He produced a superb leap at the last when required to see off the persistent Whisper, and leave us all wanting more when he returned.
The one where it all went wrong
Kauto Star Novices’ Chase, Kempton, December 26, 2016
You know what is coming. It was the day after Christmas last year and we were all about to receive a spectacular late gift after Might Bite had left his rivals toiling.
All that remained was the last fence. With his rivals 18 lengths and more behind, Might Bite approached the final obstacle and . . . crashed to the ground with the contest at his mercy.
Sore but otherwise unscathed, Might Bite went down as one of the most unfortunate losers of the season. But his talent was there for all to see in no uncertain terms.
The one where we all thought 'surely not?'
RSA Novices’ Chase, Cheltenham Festival, March 15, 2017
Might Bite returned from his Kempton fall with an easy, peasy victory in a three-runner race at Doncaster.
Lining up at Cheltenham as the 7-2 favourite, Might Bite went straight into the lead and proceeded to burn off his opponents in his scintillating style. He even managed to clear the last, albeit in an unconvincing manner, and all he had to do was run up the hill to victory.
But races are rarely simple when Might Bite is involved, and he veered sharply right towards the stands looking as if he had thrown away another race. However, rider Nico de Boinville got him back on an even keel and, to everyone’s amazement, got up to pip Whisper on the line.

What they say
Those connected to Might Bite on what they think of him . . .
Nicky Henderson, trainer
Everyone thinks he's quirky but he's not, he just needs minding a bit.
Nico de Boinville, rider
He's such a talented horse and very special, but he's a bit of a thinker sometimes and we've got to deal with that. He's got so much talent it's scary.
What the future could hold
The 32Red King George VI Chase is the first major target for Might Bite. He is the 7-2 favourite to capture the Christmas contest at Kempton.
As for the Cheltenham Festival, Might Bite is 16-1 for the Ryanair Chase and 10-1 for the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup.
