The champions of the present have been crowned, but there's one final chance to find a future star to warm Flat fans' cockles for the winter as the William Hill Futurity Trophy (2.40) brings the curtain down on Britain's Group 1s this year.

After the glitz and glamour of Ascot's British Champions Day and with the return of Cheltenham too, Doncaster's highlight might not have the fanfare it once had. However, ignore it as your peril, as it is a serious breeding ground for next year's Classics.

Six of its last seven winners have secured Group 1 wins following it, with five of those victorious in Classics. Even though Ancient Wisdom's triumph a year ago hasn't worked out as high-class form, the race still produced a German 2,000 Guineas winner, a French 2,000 Guineas runner-up and a Derby and St Leger fourth.
