It's not easy to make sense of a Cambridgeshire like no other - but two stand out as the right type
There aren't many trends that can survive 32mm of rain. If enough falls on Saturday to maintain Friday's heavy going, this will be the first heavy ground Cambridgeshire in the Racing Post era. There have only been a handful on soft in that time, with umpteen on good to firm. The Cambridgeshire is entering unusual territory.
Friday's GoingStick reading of 5.2 was the lowest published at Newmarket in at least a decade. That sounds more dramatic than it is, because last November there was a 5.4.
It would be only a little over simplistic to reduce your Cambridgeshire form study to picking out the field's most committed mudlark. The last time this race was run on remotely soft ground, that strategy would have kept 50-1 winner Dolphin Vista on the shortlist.
