In-form Patrick Neville targets more success with lightly raced runner - punting pointers for Saturday's action
Punting pointers from some of today's race meetings . . .
Catterick: Frisby to fly the flag for in-form trainer
The Real Whacker ran an excellent race to finish fourth in the King George on Boxing Day, continuing the excellent form of Patrick Neville, and the trainer runs Frisby in the 2m3½f maiden hurdle (1.00).
Neville has saddled winners at 6-1, 2-1, 10-1 and 40-1 in the last fortnight – yielding a 36 per cent strike-rate – and he goes in search of further success with this promising six-year-old.
An Irish point-to-point winner for Ellmarie Holden, Frisby was second to subsequent winner Derryhassen Paddy on his rules debut at Ayr in February and has a beautiful pedigree given he is related to the Grade 1-winning mare J'y Vole.
Frisby's chief rival is expected to be the Anthony Honeyball-trained Kdeux Saint Fray, who is attempting to build on his narrow bumper success at Ascot last month. The four-year-old also holds winning point-to-point form after a 14-length score at Dingley in May.
Catterick stat: all eyes on Lucy Wadham
Trainer Lucy Wadham is operating at a 44 per cent strike-rate (4-9) in the past two weeks and is responsible for Aunty Christine in the 1m7½f mares' novice hurdle (2.10) at Catterick.
Leicester: course-and-distance winner Cody returns
William Cody was a 28-length winner the last and only time he negotiated the 2m4f (3.10) course and distance at Leicester.
That came off a mark of 108 in March when he downed the 10-11 favourite Clonakilty, with the only other finisher Si Elegant another 26 lengths adrift.
He is 9lb higher now and the £20,000 feature handicap chase is a competitive affair, but the Pam Sly-trained seven-year-old is the field's sole course-and-distance winner and he looked as good as ever on his penultimate start at Huntingdon.
Sly said: "He seems okay and hopefully the ground might have dried out a bit. There isn't talk of any rain, but it's not dry — it's damp and horrible."
William Cody finished 24 lengths behind in fourth at Southwell earlier this month. Sly added: "He's fine after it, but it was probably a step too far for him. Hopefully he'll be okay."
Leicester stat: side with Olly Murphy
Olly Murphy is operating at a 67 per cent (2-3) in handicap chases at Leicester this season and he has three chances in that sphere with Northern Reel (12.45), Gavroche D’Allier (1.55) and Champagnesuperover (3.10).
Newcastle: Showering a future star?
There may be an old star on show in the form of the Group 1-placed Trais Fluors, but there could be a star of the future on the same card when Showering makes his second start for William Haggas in the 6f novice stakes (4.00).
The colt made a smart start to his career over this course and distance towards the start of the month and hails from a wonderfully accomplished Lael Stables family. He defeated the Archie Watson-trained Blue Empress by a length that day, while the 6-4 favourite Badge Of Honor was a further three-quarters of a length back in third.
His brother Brewing is a five-time winner, while his half-siblings Cold Front and Wonder Spirit both graced the winner's enclosure.
Haggas has had another impressive year on the all-weather at Newcastle. Eight winners from the 31 runners he has sent to the track has produced a healthy 26 per cent strike-rate. He also saddles Mahato in the 6f handicap (6.00).
Southwell: eyecatching debutante
Few mares capture the hearts of the public as well as Missunited did. Aided by the colourful personality of her trainer Michael Winters, the dual-purpose mare earned a legion of fans which followed her into battle.
She finished second in the Irish Cesarewitch as a five-year-old and then went on to win a Grade 3 novice hurdle, Galway Hurdle, a Listed race on the Flat, before finishing third in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak and second in the Ascot Gold Cup to Leading Light.
Already a top-class broodmare, she has produced winners Eagles By Day, Wholeness and Au Clair De Lune. Only One Blue, by sire of the moment Blue Point, will be hoping to emulate her illustrious siblings in the mile novice (6.45).
It promises to be a hot 12-runner contest, with Simon and Ed Crisford double-handed in the race with Harpsichord and stablemate Suzette Defoye – a €260,000 yearling purchase – also in line for their first outings.
