The last Classic of the year turns out to be a bijou contest, only seven runners but quite closely matched on the face of it, apart from the outsider. Collectively, this St Leger field presents a tricky puzzle for punters and also for each other.

Illinois, the longstanding favourite, is naturally the centre of attention. But it might not take many seconds after the stalls open before attention shifts on to his stablemate Grosvenor Square, who has developed a really aggressive manner of racing in his last two starts.
