Harry Derham's red-hot form and Aidan O'Brien's formidable record at Gowran - punting pointers for Monday

Punting pointers from some of today's race meetings . . .

Bath: Marchetti bids to go one better

Jimmy Fox has only a handful of horses at his Wiltshire yard but it's worth noting when he turns up at Bath where he's had two winners from four runners this season.

Both victories have been in open-company handicaps and he fields another who fits that bill in Marchetti in the mile handicap (5.15).

The seven-year-old mare is due another win this year, having finished runner-up on her last four starts. Alec Voikhansky takes off a handy 3lb and could make the difference against nine rivals on testing ground.

Gowran Park: Aidan O'Brien out to boost formidable record

Aidan O'Brien has a formidable record at Gowran Park this year, winning with eight of his 15 runners. On Monday, he sends three out in search of a maiden win, with the most notable of those being the well-bred Light As Air over an extended mile (2.30).

A half-brother to Classic winner Continuous, Light As Air finished a respectable third behind his odds-on stablemate Isambard Brunel at Navan on his debut this month, and could put his experience to good use against nine rivals.

Light As Air will face stablemate Saints N Scholars, while O'Brien also saddles Iseult Of Ireland in the fillies' maiden later on the card (5.00).

Plumpton: Harry Derham is the trainer to follow

Harry Derham is in decent form and the young trainer sends just one runner out on Monday, O'Grady's Hill, who lines up in the 3m1f mares' handicap hurdle (5.30) at Plumpton.

The five-year-old reappeared after a short break with sixth-placed effort at Kelso and is liable to come on for that. She looks to have sound prospects of notching a first success under rules and should appreciate this step up in trip, having won an Irish point-to-point in April.

Derham said: "She was a bit disappointing last time out, but I probably left her a bit short, having had a break. She's improved for the run. This doesn't look a good race and hopefully she'll be competitive."

He added: "They're all running well and I've had a few nice winners. It's very early days and a lot of my string won't come out until November, but I'm pleased with how everyone is performing."

Pontefract: Wise Eagle set to soar again

Wise Eagle faces a small but select field in a bid for a second success in the Phil Bull Trophy Conditions Stakes (4.15) at Pontefract.

The seven-year-old has been a fine servant for the Northumberland yard of Adam Nicol, with 11 of his 12 victories coming for the trainer, including in this race two years ago.

He will be partnered for the first time by Paul Mulrennan in this marathon contest, which drew four runners.

Hughie Morrison has won the race twice since 2015 and takes on Wise Eagle with Kyle Of Lochalsh, who was a decent third in Listed company last time out, while the Ralph Beckett-trained Oxford Comma narrowly topped the market for the first show on the race. Rajinsky appears likely to start the outsider of the quartet.

Wise Eagle hasn't won since the spring of last year, but a reproduction of the form of his third place in the Group 3 John Smith's Silver Cup at York in July may well be enough to secure a 13th victory.

Pontefract stat: Tankard has a tasty line-up

All five runners in the Listed Silver Tankard Stakes (3.15) at Pontefract won last time out. Perhaps the most intriguing contender is likely favourite Calla Lagoon, who is one of two runners with an entry in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday.

Southwell: Harry Charlton's strong record is worth second look

Harry Charlton is operating at a 33 per cent strike-rate at Southwell this year and saddles two runners on the card.

The trainer, who has recorded three winners from nine runners, will bid to return to winning ways with Magical Merlin, who tackles division one of the mile handicap (5.08).

Stablemate Tremolo will attempt to improve on his Salisbury fourth when he lines up in the 7f novice (6.15).

Southwell stat: Boughey aims to improve course record

George Boughey is operating at a 32 per cent strike-rate in three-year-old-plus handicaps at the venue (7-22, +£24.54) and Classic Encounter features in one such race under apprentice Tommie Jakes (5.43).

Wolverhampton: Second Name is one to note

The well-bred Second Name makes his debut for Roger Varian in the 6f novice event (6.30) at Wolverhampton and looks one to keep an eye on.

Owned by KHK Racing, the three-year-old son of Exceed And Excel was a 270,000gns buy as a yearling and is a half-brother to four winners, including Group 2 scorers Sakheer and Lemista.

James Doyle takes the ride in a six-runner contest that also includes €110,000 yearling purchase Mockirr, who is trained by William Haggas.
