Gustavus Weston in flying form ahead of quest for second Phoenix Sprint Stakes
Sunday: 3.05 Curragh
Rathasker Stud Phoenix Sprint Stakes (Group 3) | 6f | 3yo+ | RTV
This looks a tight race with the majority of runners rated in a 4lb range between 104 and 108.
Gustavus Weston won this in 2019 and is arguably in the form of his life as he attempts to reclaim his crown. He will be suited by the ground, which is likely to come up soft after heavy rain throughout the weekend.
The Queen has never had a winner in Ireland but in the William Haggas-trained Light Refrain she has strong claims of seeing her colours carried to victory.
Light Refrain has form with solid sprinters in Britain and arrives after a career-best win in a Group 3 at York.
Like Gustavus Weston, she has won on soft ground and rates a major player.
A Case Of You is another who loves to get his toe in and the softer the ground comes up, the better chance he will have.
What they say
Joe Murphy, trainer of Gustavus Weston
He's having a great year and we're very happy with him. He has to give weight away as a Group 2 winner but we didn't really have other options for him. Hopefully, he can run well and later in the season we could look at races like the Sprint Cup at Haydock, the Flying Five back at the Curragh and the big sprint at Ascot [on Champions Day].
Ado McGuinness, trainer of Harry's Bar and A Case Of You
Harry's Bar has been freshened up since his last run. He probably hasn't been just right [in his recent starts] but we think we have him back now. He just wouldn't want it to turn too soft. A Case Of You pulled a shoe in the Commonwealth Cup and came home fairly sore afterwards. We've given him a good break since and he's done a couple of nice pieces of work. We're very hopeful of a big run.
William Haggas, trainer of Light Refrain
She's been in good form and the rain should suit her, so she'd have a good chance. Her win last time at York was against fillies only and this time she's running against all sorts, but she's very well.
Ken Condon, trainer of Teresa Mendoza
Teresa Mendoza ran well last time and seems to like the Curragh. She seems ground versatile and hopefully she can run a nice race.
