The scene is set for Galopin Des Champs to emulate another Closutton luminary in Florida Pearl by landing his third successive Irish Gold Cup and it's difficult to see how his opposition can thwart him over a course and distance where he has been seen to breathtaking effect on four occasions.

Overall, Galopin Des Champs is a flawless six from six over fences at Leopardstown and his 23-length demolition job in the Savills Chase last season ranks up there with the greatest staying performances ever seen in Ireland.

This campaign started off in similar fashion to last, with a defeat in the John Durkan, but it's clear now that 2m3½f around Punchestown doesn't allow him to spread his shoulders and put on the thunderous staying masterclass he's capable of.
