Ebor runner-up out to strike over hurdles and chaser bids for repeat Durham National win - punting pointers for Sunday

Punting pointers for today's race meetings . . .

Kempton: Ebor second Kihavah switches codes

Trainer Adrian Keatley is banking on race-fitness counting for plenty as Ebor runner-up Kihavah switches to hurdles for a hot Listed contest (4.00) at Kempton.

Kihavah, who won a 1m5f handicap at Ayr last month, takes on the likes of last year's winner Rubaud, smart hurdler First Street and Punchestown festival scorer Casa No Mento, all of whom return after breaks.

"He's in good nick and he'll love the ground," said Keatley. "We think he has plenty left in him over hurdles and the track should suit.

"He's an exceptionally good hurdler and we probably have the advantage against most of them of having been running. With the bigger jumps yards, their horses seem to be taking a run."

Kihavah has successfully interchanged between the Flat and jumps and before his run in the Ebor, he was a solid second to Castel Gandolfo in the Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen.

Kempton stat: perfect race record

Nigel Twiston-Davies has won Kempton's 3m handicap chase (4.35) three times in the last ten years from three runners. He hasn't been represented in the race since 2017, but targets another victory with Poppa Poutine.

Limerick: Arkle contender Farren Glory starts chasing career

Grade 1-winning hurdler Farren Glory, who is a 33-1 shot for the Arkle, makes his eagerly awaited debut over fences in the concluding 2m3f beginners' chase (5.00).

Farren Glory's finest hour arrived in the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse last December and he might well have added another Grade 1 in the Formby Novices' Hurdle at Aintree over Christmas had he not crashed out at the second-last when appearing to be travelling all over his rivals.

Gordon Elliott is excited about the prospect of sending him over fences and hopes he can rank highly among a stellar list of novice chasers.

Elliott said: "He's unlucky not to have won two Grade 1s last season and I've always thought a lot of him. He will hopefully do very well over fences this season and his schooling has gone nicely. I've been very happy with him and we're looking forward to it."

Leopardstown: Weld goes in search of tenth Trigo victory

No trainer has won the Thomas's Of Foxrock Jim And Kathleen Murphy Memorial Trigo Stakes (3.35) more than Dermot Weld and the legendary trainer is doubly represented in his search for a tenth success in the Leopardstown Listed event.

Some real Rosewell House favourites have won it, including Stage Affair (1997) and Famous Name on three occasions (2008, 2010 and 2012), and Elizabeth Jane would appear the stable number one with Chris Hayes on board.

She was a seriously impressive winner of a maiden at this track last autumn and, while she has yet to win this season, a repeat of her fine fourth to You Got To Me in the Irish Oaks back in July would make her a major player here.

Weld's other representative is Spoken Truth, who proved a bitter disappointment in the Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh the last time we saw him in May when sent off favourite.

Sedgefield: Tommie Beau targets repeat win in Durham National

Last year's bet365 Durham National (4.20) winner Tommie Beau returns for another crack at the course's feature race of the season in the form of his life.

The Seamus Mullins-trained nine-year-old has achieved figures of 11212 this term and, as a result, carries top weight in the 3m5f contest on a mark some 16lb higher than when successful 12 months ago.

"It's a difficult task but this is his kind of race in that he's a big fish in a small pond," said Mullins. "He's fit and well and did a nice piece of work this week, and we go there with a very serious chance.

"We're realistic in that we're possibly in the grip of the handicapper, but looking at his main dangers none of them have performed on the track or over an extended distance."

Sedgefield stat: trainer to note

Brian Ellison has a 43 per cent strike-rate (3-7, +£17) in juvenile hurdles at Sedgefield in the last four seasons. He bids to enhance that record with Sweet Soul Music (2.35).
