If this season’s winner turns out to be as good as last year’s we will have a star on our hands because Alpinista went on to win four more times after landing this Listed event 12 months ago and those victories included the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock and three Group 1 races in Germany.

There are some Group performers lining up again and Save A Forest is chief among them. She was fourth in the Oaks last year before winning a Listed race at Newmarket.

Her trainer Roger Varian was successful in this race in 2017 with Ajman Princess and his only other runner in the last ten seasons Shimmering Surf finished second ten years ago.

William Haggas doesn't feature on the recent roll of honour, but it’s not been for the want of trying. From four runners in the last ten years he has had a second and two thirds. All three were making their seasonal reappearance and he must hold Bartzella in high regard to be pitching her in at this level after winning in novice company at Ascot. She returns from 210 days off.

What of Silence Please? She is also back after a winter break but she is trained in a different country now, having been switched from Jessica Harrington in Ireland to Andrew Balding.

She has competed in Group company on her last nine starts and been placed on four occasions, so might just hold a class edge dropping into Listed company.

Andrew Balding is 3-6 with runners who were making their debut for his yard, following a switch from another trainer, since the start of last year for a £1 level-stake profit of £5.43. That suggests Silence Please will be ready to go on her first outing for the Kingsclere trainer.

Folk back on the dancefloor

Folk Dance has been off for 587 days, but connections are encouraged that trainer David Simcock seems keen to try her at Listed level.

She was bred by owners Michael Wyatt and his son Charlie and will join their broodmare band later in the year, but there is hope she can embellish her pedigree before then.

"She did a leg, so came back home for a lot of rest and recuperation – she's been doing nothing at our stud," said Charlie Wyatt.

"She went back into training with David and, touch wood, has been going well. He tells me she might be a bit backward in her coat, but the fact he wants to start off in a Listed race after such a long time off is pretty positive.

"We leave plans to him and we like her a lot. The dream is to get some black type and I'm cautiously optimistic."

What they say

James Ferguson, trainer of Crystal Starlet
She showed significant improvement when we stepped her up in trip at Wolverhampton last time and she's come out of that race well. She's in good form and we hope she can run really well.

Ed Walker, trainer of Glenartney
Although she's at her best with cut it's not an absolute necessity and it's not summer fast ground. She's a lightly raced filly who's going to carry on improving.
