Clonmel repeat bid for Allegorie De Vassy and Skelton hurdler seeks seventh win in eight starts - Thursday's punting pointers
Punting pointers from each of today's race meetings . . .
Chelmsford: can Maid In Chelsea make hat-trick a reality?
Jack Jones is hopeful Maid In Chelsea can land a hat-trick in the 6f handicap (8.00).
The daughter of Dark Angel was a promising fourth on debut and returned from a midsummer break with novice wins at Wolverhampton and Windsor. Racing Post Ratings suggests there could be mileage in her official mark of 75.
Dylan Hogan’s mount has a good draw in stall two and is unexposed compared with some of her battle-hardened rivals.
Jones said: "She had two runs relatively quick together when winning her maiden and novice. Heavy ground went against her at Windsor last time, but class got her through it and we've kept her ticking over since.
"She's fresh and fit now, so we've been keeping her happy, and she seems in good order. I'm happy with this race for her and she seems to have a good chance, so hopefully she can bring up the hat-trick."
Chelmsford stat: Matt Crawley
Trainer Matt Crawley has a 33 per cent strike-rate (2-6) with runners in three-year-old-plus handicaps at Chelmsford. He saddles new recruit Prefer The Sister in the 7f race (5.30).
Clonmel: Allegorie De Vassy heads smart line-up for Listed event
Allegorie De Vassy bids for back-to-back wins in the Listed T.A. Morris Memorial Irish EBF Mares Chase (2.05) on her reappearance.
Paul Townend’s mount beat Instit in the race last year and finished fourth in the Mares’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
Allegorie De Vassy has a perfect 3-3 record on her first start of the season since joining Willie Mullins.
Her rivals include stablemate Pink In The Park, who has the benefit of race-fitness and drops in class after finishing fourth in a Grade 3 novice chase at Punchestown last month.
Gordon Elliott has won the race in four of the last seven years and saddles the four-timer-seeking Shecouldbeanything.
The seven-year-old has racked up three wins and a second since sent chasing in September, including a six-and-a-half-length victory over Pink In The Park at Listowel that month.
Ludlow: notebooks out for introductory hurdle
The Class 2 introductory hurdle (3.00) has attracted another select field but some potentially smart types.
There have been no more than eight runners in the race in the last five years and the Dan Skelton-trained Deep Purple, a recent bumper winner at Southwell, has his first start over hurdles and is the mount of Kielan Woods.
Jamie Snowden nominated Wendigo as one of his two horses for the tracker in his stable tour with the Racing Post this week and runs the dual bumper winner in this £30,000 event.
Wendigo has the benefit of a run over hurdles, having finished second at Hexham on his reappearance last month, and Snowden expects the five-year-old to show improvement from that run.
Alastair Ralph had saddled four winners from his last eight runners before Wednesday’s racing and the local trainer is represented with the promising Lightningupourdays.
Newbury: Major Fortune aims to extend fantastic run
Major Fortune bids for a seventh win in his last eight starts in the Pertemps qualifier (2.52).
The Noel Fehily Racing-owned six-year-old started off in handicaps off a mark of 81 and is now rated 46lb higher after a memorable run
Major Fortune, trained by Dan Skelton, racked up a five-timer from December to March, including three consecutive wins in testing ground at Lingfield, before finishing second when upped in grade at Ayr’s Scottish National meeting in April.
He returned with a ready win at Newton Abbot last month and recorded a career-best Racing Post Rating of 127.
Major Fortune receives weight from all bar one of his four rivals, including topweight Monmiral, who won the final of this series at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
Emitom was fifth in the series final last season, having qualified when second in this race 12 months ago. The ten-year-old runs off 10lb higher this time.
Newbury stat: Harry Cobden
Champion jockey Harry Cobden has a 30 per cent strike-rate (16-53) when riding for James Owen. They team up with the trainer’s new recruit L’Astronome in the 2m½f novice hurdle (1.05).
Newcastle: HK Fourteen well-in for quick repeat bid
HK Fourteen attracted plenty of support before winning at Bath last week and bids to follow up in the concluding 6f handicap (6.15).
The four-year-old, bought for €220,000 by the Hong Kong Jockey Club in 2021, then unsold at 900gns two years later, was dropped to 5½f when gaining a first win on his second handicap start for Tony Carroll.
HK Fourteen was backed into 11-4, having been as big as 40-1 the previous evening, and is set to be a warm order in this low-grade handicap.
Jack Doughty’s mount carries a 5lb penalty but is 6lb well in having been raised 11lb by the handicapper.
Carroll said: "He seems okay. He’s come out of the Bath race well, so we’ll see if he can handle the all-weather surface. He won okay last time, but he was put up 11lb, which is a bit stiff, but we’ll see how he gets on."
Southwell: in-form trainer seeks more success with two runners
Declan Carroll has trained three winners from his four runners this week and bids to continue the good run on the eight-race card.
Harry Smith seeks to ride his first winner on Fortunate Star in the opening 5f amateur riders’ handicap (11.40), having finished second and third on the sprinter last month.
Apprentice Zak Wheatley has ridden Carroll’s three recent winners and partners the progressive Jalaybee in the mile handicap (3.45).
Carroll said: “Fortunate Star has been very disappointing but Harry has done well on him and hopefully can get a tune out of him. Jalaybee has been running well around Southwell and is a good, little fun horse for there. He’s capable of running another big race.”
