Can this handicapper end his run of six consecutive seconds? Punting pearls for Friday's action
Punting pointers from some of Friday's race meetings . . .
Ballinrobe
Placing £1 on all five of Michael O'Sullivan's rides at Ballinrobe so far this season would have yielded a profit of £16.75. He could add to his two winners at the track this term on Arctic Piper (4.00) or Slieve Carran (4.35).
Chester: Sangster out to strike in both divisions of novice event
Sands Of Marra has his sights lowered by trainer Ollie Sangster after finishing 12th in the Molecomb Stakes last time.
Four of the juveniles who finished ahead of the son of Sands Of Mali in that Glorious Goodwood Group 3 race run in Doncaster’s Flying Childers Stakes on Friday, after his attempt to get back to winning ways in the opening division of Chester’s 6f novice event (2.10)
Bob Mali, Sands Of Marra's stablemate and a fellow son of Sands Of Mali, could complete a notable double for owners Pompey Ventures if following up his successful debut at Ayr in the second division (2.45).
Chester: can Kirrane keep up 50 per cent strike-rate?
Sean Kirrane has ridden four winners from eight rides at Chester this season with an impressive level-stake profit of £45.50.
That 50 per cent strike-rate on the Roodee will give the Group 1-winning jockey confidence on his couple of mounts, who will be experiencing the track for the first time.
Quest For Fun is off a 1lb lower mark than when beaten half a length by Tolstoy at York in June and the winner is now rated 16lb higher, having won twice more, including in a Racing League handicap.
Kirrane partners the six-year-old in the feature 7f handicap (5.05) for Tim Easterby, having steered the trainer’s stable stalwart Copper Knight to victory here in June.
Chantilly maiden winner Foreseen makes his second start for Adam West since being bought for 5,000gns from Juddmonte and Francis Graffard under Kirrane in the finale (5.40).
Sandown: severe case of seconditis
Nogo’s Dream has finished second on each of his last six starts and bids to end that severe bout of seconditis in the 5f handicap (2.35).
The Richard Hughes-trained four-year-old has been 13-8 favourite on his last two runs and is able to compete off the same mark of 75 as when beaten half a length by Mart at Brighton last time.
The £4,449 first prize is just over a third of what the son of Oasis Dream has earned by making the frame this season, but having gone down by a neck at Lingfield in June and a head at Windsor in July, connections can be forgiven for feeling their sprinter deserves his day in the sun.
If taking to Sandown on his first visit to the track, he may avoid the runner-up berth he has filled nine times since recording his sole success at Wolverhampton in March last year.
Salisbury: blistering Boughey
George Boughey has sent out three winners, two seconds and a fourth from seven runners for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid. He has a chance of improving that impressive 43 per cent strike-rate for the owner with Leicester maiden winner Celeborn in the mile novice stakes (3.15).
Salisbury: Johnson Houghton hoping for repeat Group 3 win
Eve Johnson Houghton won last year’s Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes with Juniper Berries and aims to repeat the feat in the Salisbury Group 3 (3.55) with Betty Clover.
The daughter of Time Test is the highest-rated juvenile in the line-up, having beaten subsequent Naas Listed winner Miss Lamai in that grade when landing the Marygate Fillies' Stakes at York in May.
She also chased home Simmering in the Princess Margaret Stakes, beaten only a neck by the winner, who has since followed up in a Deauville Group 2, before disappointing in the Lowther last time.
Despite finishing ahead of just one of her eight rivals in the Lowther last time, Johnson Houghton said: "She's obviously been busy but she's in great form. I think she goes there with a solid chance.
"Her run at York last time was too bad to be true. If she'd finished fifth or sixth, beaten five lengths, I'd think it was okay but to run as bad as that wasn't right. I don't know what bothered her but something did. It's best to write it off and start again."
Juddmonte’s Tabiti looks the main danger for trainer Ralph Beckett, who won this for her owner-breeders with Juliet Sierra in 2022.
