Can Lunar Eclipse leave her rivals in the shade on her handicap and stable debut for Kevin Ryan?

This is a fascinating fillies’ handicap featuring some promising types. The best of them could be Lunar Eclipse, who was thought good enough to contest the Pretty Polly over a mile and a quarter in the spring.

Lunar Eclipse was beaten more than 16 lengths into fifth that day, but that run doesn’t look too shabby given the winner Friendly Soul has won three times since, including the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp, and runner-up Kalpana won a Group 1 at Ascot on Saturday.

Lunar Eclipse has been off the track since that run in May and now returns from 171 days off the track to make her debut for Kevin Ryan, having left previous trainer David Simcock. The worry is that Ryan is 0-13 with horses switching trainers since their last run in recent seasons.

Twirling is a solid-looking option towards the top of the weights. Ryan Moore is booked to ride for Simon and Ed Crisford and Twirling ran well for third on the July course at Newmarket in the summer.

She was also third at Goodwood two starts ago, while she wasn’t beaten far despite finishing last of six at Ascot last time and could bounce back.

Surveyor and Zapphire are two others with solid recent records and, having finished in the first three in nine of their last 12 starts combined, look the best options for Placepot players.

Weather update

The going is soft. It is set to be dry on Tuesday and dry but cloudy on Wednesday with the odd sunny spell. Daytime temperatures are set to reach 14C.

What they say

Ed Crisford, joint-trainer of Twirling
She’s a solid filly who likes a bit of cut in the ground and this looks the right race for her. She’ been in good form at home and goes there in very good order.

James Fanshawe, trainer of Surveyor
She didn't run that well on soft ground at Sandown earlier in the year but there may have been other factors involved. Fillies are difficult to judge at this time of year but she seems in good form at home.

James Ferguson, trainer of Nocturnal
We felt that her run at Haydock last time wasn’t her true running and hopefully the drop back in trip and first time cheekpieces will see an improved showing.

Ed Walker, trainer of Queen’s Reign
I'd been thinking of running her in another Listed race in France after her decent effort in stakes company at Ascot, so she ought to go well. She runs off a mark only 1lb higher than when an unlucky second at Newbury last month and will love the ground.

Julie Camacho, trainer of Zapphire
It’s a funny time of year for these fillies but she’s still up for it and the cut in the ground should suit her. She’s been found out by flat tracks like Redcar lately, but hopefully this should suit her better.

Tim Palin, racing manager to Middleham Park Racing, owners of Ziggy’s Phoenix
She’s a course and distance winner who likes juice in the ground and could be well drawn in stall one. She’s in the sales next week so hopefully she can go out with a bang.
