Amateur rider goes for notable glory again and a course specialist returns to his happy place - punting pointers for Saturday
Punting pearls for some of Saturday's meetings . . .
Curragh: will Benson be buzzing again in Ladies Trophy?
Georgie Benson landed the biggest success of her career in the Ladies Trophy Handicap (3.25) last year and she's back in the hunt again.
Benson has ridden five winners in her career, three over jumps and two on the Flat, including when claiming this contest restricted to female amateur riders on Pachmena last year.
She has not had a winner on the Flat since that triumph, albeit from only four rides, but bids to lift the trophy again with the Denis Hogan-trained Polemon.
The five-year-old struck on his first start for Hogan at Gowran Park in August and won again at Tipperary last month. However, he has been beaten twice since and races off the same mark of 75.
Curragh: Aga Khan runners well in profit
The Aga Khan's runners at the track this year have yielded an impressive £18.50 profit to a £1 level stake. His famous colours are carried by Tilani and Balibel in the 7f maiden (1.05).
Southwell: track specialist back for more
This all-weather track brings out the best in Mustajaab and connections are hoping he can shine again in the 7f handicap (5.45).
Trained by William Muir and Chris Grassick, the four-year-old boasts a perfect record in two starts over the course and distance. The first win came by a short head off a mark of 84 in May 2023 and he stormed to a two-and-a-quarter-length success off 2lb higher in April. His rating is 85 this time.
Mustajaab has failed to land a blow in seven starts since his April win, including when highly tried at Royal Ascot and Newmarket's July meeting, and connections now send him back to his favourite track.
Muir said: "He's been very good around Southwell, so it made sense to go back. The ground has gone for him now on turf and he likes this surface. I'd say there are more pluses than negatives, he's got a fair draw and a good jockey in Benoit de la Sayette."
Southwell: Boughey handicappers in hot form
George Boughey has a 44 per cent strike-rate here this year with handicappers aged three or older for a £30.54 profit to a £1 level stake. He saddles Disclosure (5.15), Giorgio M (5.45) and Fouroneohfever (6.15).
Wolverhampton: can Faulkner prosper at the track again?
Wolverhampton has proved to be the happiest hunting ground for Tom Faulkner in the early stages of his training career and he has two chances to enhance his terrific track record.
Faulkner took over the licence from his mother Deborah this year and has had two winners from 30 runners. Both of those have come at this track from just five runners (40 per cent strike-rate and a level-stake profit of £16.33).
His first runner on the nine-race card is Renoir in the 1m4f handicap (4.20). The five-year-old was a course-and-distance fifth on his previous visit but will need to settle better. Faulkner is also represented in the 6f handicap (7.00) by Big Impact, with both set to be ridden by Taylor Fisher.
Faulkner said: "I'm not sure they'd have as strong chances as the others but we'll see. We're working out what's what with Big Impact. He's coming back off a long time away but he's a course-and-distance winner and seems in good form. We're not sure if the mile and a half is the right trip for Renoir, so we'll see. He didn't run too badly last time, though, and this isn't the strongest race."
