With big price tags come high expectations and there is a lot of excitement about the potential of Caldwell Potter, who carries the burden of being the most expensive jumps horse sold at public auction.

The six-year-old had already scored at the highest level for Gordon Elliott when winning the Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown last Christmas before being sold for €740,000 as part of Andrew and Gemma Brown's Caldwell Construction dispersal in February. He was bought by Sir Alex Ferguson, Ged Mason, John Hales and Peter Done and moved to Britain to join Paul Nicholls.

His connections resisted the temptation to run him at the major spring festivals and chose the calmer waters of a 2m novice chase at Carlisle for his first start over fences. He was sent off the 2-11 favourite before making all under champion jockey Harry Cobden, a performance that encouraged bookmakers to cut him to 20-1 for the Brown Advisory and 25-1 for the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival.
